I have a problem in that I have Windows 64-bit on my PC to go with my 64 bit processor and the game says that the operating system is not adequate and so does not install. is there a patch or some way of getting around this?

Windows XP 64-bit is not supported.

From the readme.txt:

The Caesar IV Demo does not support Windows(R) Media Center Edition,
Windows(R) XP 64-bit Edition or Windows(R) Vista.

I don't have XP 64-bit so I can't help you with the details, but you might want to try installing and running it as a 32 bit application. I believe there is some method of doing that.

Thanks for that... it seems like it just has information about what this WOW64 program does though, not actually how to run and install the game as 32 bit. am i missing something? sorry, it's sunday morning. i have obviously shut down my brain for the weekend... :)

I can't help you there. I don't have Win 64 so I just wanted to get you pointed in the right direction. You may want to refer to these:
