I can get the demo to start, but it seems to put a major drag on my system which makes scrolling and selecting objects painfully slow. What are the suggested settings?

Post your DxDiag file, please. Without it we can't help you. We need to know your pc's specs.

I updated the Nvidia drivers as recommended. Now I can't change the resolution of any screen in the game, including the opening flash screen. I can see half of the info.

If you chaged the screen resolution in the game and it's too big on your screen, you can change the in-game settings back by editing the CaesarIV.ini file with Windows Notepade text edtor.
Open the file in Notepad and change the following lines to look like this (if they are different):
Game Window Height 768
Game Window Width 1024
Resave the ini file as CaesarIV.ini.
Make sure it's not saved as CaesarIV.ini.txt, if it is just rename it to CaesarIV.ini.
Have you tried reducing hardware on acceleration on your system to fix your original problem?
Right click on the desktop in a empty blank area and select properties. Then on the Properties menu, click on the Settings tab, then the Advanced button in the lower right corner. On the Advance Settings menu click on the Troubleshoot tab. If the slider is set to Maximu move it back one notch. Click APPLY. Try running the demo. If you still have the problem close the demo, move the slider back another notch. Click Apply. Load the demo. Repeat until you either fix your problem or you hit the bottom of the slider and you still have the issue you started with. In which case, you can reset the slider back to Maximum and click Apply.

Unfortunately it's already at that resolution. Guess I won't be playing this game anytime soon.

Hmmm...try renaming the CaesarIV.ini file to CaesarIV.org. Then try running the demo. It may create a new one based on your system setup. If that doesn't work deleted the new one and rename the original back to CeasarIV.ini.

Try looking at my lag movie thread: http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9843
Is it lagging like me? or its even worse? And I would suggest you to make some 'clean-up' on your PC (its a bit like what I did, because this looks similar). See this thread :

Hope that helps you;)
Thanks:)

After de-fragging, and getting rid of the wireless keyboard most of the lag is gone. Thank you to everyone who helped. I'll head over to game play to see if anyone has a chart that shows what links to what (water to pump, etc.)
