Hi,

I have a problem whereby I start a new city and start placing buildings. Sometimes a little way into the game, it just freezes. The mouse cursor goes to "busy" when over some parts of the screen and "free" on others. It always happenes when I am placing buildings, once a Prefects' Office, the other time a Vegetable Field. This only seems to happen occasionally, and I think if I play the game "Hitman 2" before playing C4. Nothing can get the program to minimize, CTRL + ALT + DEL, ALT + TAB & ALT +F4 don't seem to work, although once, I pressed a number of those and whilst click around on the screen I got that "BUM" noise you get on Windows when click on an active window (or something like that). The screen however, stays frozen on C4.

I have to force-restart my computer by the reset button on my case.

The PC was built by myself and although I need to update my video drivers I don't think these are the cause, as they work most of the time, only after playing I think Hitman 2. It may be other games, but I'm only really playing Hitman 2 at the moment so I can't say.

Anybody else have this problem?

Try restarting your computer after playing Hitman (and before playing C4) and see if C4 still freezes.
If it works fine, then maybe Hitman does not free up the memory after exiting it. Running a memory recovery utility after each Hitman-session might help in that case.

Can you attach your DxDiag so that we can see? I don't have this problem and also didn't heard it in this forum.

Thanks:)

Edit:All also post at the same time :P

What I'm saying is I come out of Hitman 2, then I play C4 and it freezes. I just played it after a fresh restart now and it didn't freeze (well not in 2years & 2 months anyhow, it freezes if its going to freeze it seems within the first year).

DXDIAG attached...

I'm looking for a free memory cleaner. I had an easy one in the past, but I can't seem to find it right now. Maybe Manni knows of a good program, too.

Hang in there.

Edit: Phil was faster. :) Try his suggestion about the refresh-thing.

If it continues to freeze on you, you may want to check into updating the audio drivers. While not terribly old, they are a year old. The "busy" icon cold indicate a problem trying to load one of the sound files that is played while placing the building.

As an experiment, you may want to just try playing with all the sounds turned off and set to mimums in the demo. Set all the sliders to minimum and uncheck the three boxes.

All my hard drives are internal, the larger one is my main drive the other is just used for backups etc.

Sound Drivers can't be updated as there isn't a new version available for my card. I think I'll try the beta 91.33s, as members of a community for another game I play have reported errors in that game with 91.31 drivers, so I'm a bit wary of using them.

I'd love to know, if desirorevolution tried the memory refreshing thing and whether it works for him or not. A little feedback would be so nice.

Sorry to hack you guys off, but I've played Caesar IV a bit over the last day or so, as well as other games and I can't recreate the crash. I have also upgraded to ForceWare 91.31 drivers, to see how things pan out with them.

I'll reply if I get the crash error again, I'll conduct some tests on Wednesday and report back then.

Thanks for the kind words about Hampshire, in the countryside its nice (where I am), but the city parts are basically like any other county, and also for the feedback. Its just I'm used to on other forums, person posts problem, person replies with answer and if it works, then no further replies are usually given. Shows how much more civilized this forum is, but I'm not on it 24x7! :)
