After banging my head against the wall for 2 days now, I finally solved the unhandled exception error that I was getting when I tried to run the C4 demo. As it turns out, MS06-051 (KB917422) was the cause of my problems. The details on this update are here (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-051.mspx). If you prefer the short version, this update was released on 8/8 and addresses a couple of vulnerabilities (including a remote code vulnerability rated "critical") in the Win32 kernel.
After I uninstalled this update (via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs; you may have to check the "Show updates" checkbox at the top of this window in order to see MS updates installed on your system), the C4 demo ran perfectly. Apparently, this update is causing problems with a number of applications besides the C4 demo.
I've already forwarded this information on to MS. If you're having problems running the demo and you've ruled out everything else, you might want to check and see if you installed this update. Before uninstalling it, you might also want to weigh the pros/cons of removing a critical vulnerability patch in order to play a game. ;) Given that there seem to be other applications affected by this update, hopefully MS will publish an updated version of this security bulletin that resolve these issues.
FWIW, I also have Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 installed on my system. It's not running resident but I didn't have to uninstall it to get the C4 demo working after removing this security update.
I hope this helps some people!
