View Full Version : A soldier's life, the military aspect of CotN

Since militarism eventually became a big thing in Egypt's history, I think it would be cool if the military side of the game was more enhanced. Maybe this is already planned to be implemented, but I think it would really add to the game if you could "tag along" so to speak, with your soldiers on any military expedition. Then you get to hear their problems and concerns, throughout the campaign, or listen to their suggestions on strategy. Maybe this is better suited as an addon, it was just a thought.

An interesting idea. I seem to also recall that more than a few battles were avoided by having a rather overwhelming army and "suggesting" that they might wish to "join" Egypt. Kind of deplomacy with an attitude. This might be a more likely outcome if you (your family) treated previous defector cities well in the past. I think your army might be reasonably happy. Of course victorious solders often were able to pick up a few trinkets to take back home, which may leave you with a bit of a mess to clean up once you picked up your new city. Hum, just thinking of some new twists to this whole military approach... ;)

So, do we even know anything about how conquest of new cities is going to work? I mean, I imagine there will be a sort of classic city-builder kind of campaign, where you progress more or less linearly through the cities, and build them up. However, to even have to clean up the mess as Bradius here suggests, you'd have to actually go into the conquered city. Did I miss some info on this? (Quite likely. :))

And what if our city is under attack, what happens when we loose? Will the people fight or just surrender because the city wasn't going as well as it should.

Does loss mean defeat? Game over?

Well, you do assume the role of Pharaoh later in the game, so I still strongly believe that loosing a city or 2 doesn't matter. You're also building an empire, not just a city.

Edit: Of course loosing a city does matter gameplay wise, but it won't be game over, loosing a city would only mean loosing supplies and support.

Hmmm... I wonder how that ties in with the Campaign structure then. :)

Losing a city should only have game ending consquences if that city is the one you rule as your capital.

Your possessions, your city, and in real life most likely your life.

Ah, I see. I didn't catch the earlier misspelling. I thought you were asking about a clarification on what we meant by losing the game. I wasn't trying to be clever about it. :)

Not everyone's a native English speaker here ;) . If you find a post full of misplaced "h"s, it's probably from me ;) . But it's getting better, practise makes perfect!

Heh, at a first glance, I read that as "a post full of misspelled 'h's", and was wondering, how can one misspell an h. :)

I have friends in Berlin and Holland who are not native English speakers.. They put us who can only really speak one language well to shame with their proficiency. I take off my metaphorical hat to you gentlemen and ladies. :)

Oh, Muit. Just to let you know. I have flown through "Fortune's Wheel" and I am half-way through "Fire Margins". I got a lot more engaged in the series in "Fortune's Wheel".

Hehe. I can understand that. I was just pointing it out. If it's not you're first language...you should be proud. You could have fooled me. You speak it better then some Americans! ;)

Note: Practise should be practice. I don't mean to be mean or something I simply thought pointing that out my help you out. If it's not yuor first language sometimes you need people to point things out to notice them. My cousin for example speaks English and Spanish as a second language. He was talking with one of the Mexican immigrants who works with him on his father's dairy, and he said something that he thought was polite and the Mexican immigrant started laughing. My perplexed cousin was then informed he'd said something obscene. He was most embarassed. lol. He's much more proficient now. He can speak it fluently! (he's 19)

Mods, apologies for this definitely Off Topic reply. ;) And I ask your pardon for posting the url for Bradius. If you object, please remove it.

Bradius, thank you for the praise, it's always appreciated, believe me. Turning Point was a first novel, and as they go, not too shabby at all.. But the later ones are much better as I learned so much from my editor. If you like, pop over to our fan forum and read up the games they post set in my universe. All devised and written up by the members themselves - with a smidgin of help from me only in playing some of the bad guys or characters from my novels to preserve Copyright for me.

Now to bring it back ON Topic, I based the Valtegan's culture, as you'll see when you get further into the series, on Ancient Egypt, and my feline Sholan's one on Crete, both the climate and architecture. ;) I have had the good fortune to visit Crete but not yet Egypt.

You never visited Egypt, Miut!?

I wonder if we'll be having chariots...
I also wonder if Pharaoh will be joining battle...
I wonder if we can go FPS in the battles...

If the Egyptians had Chariots, shouldn't they appear for sure in the game at a certain time as well? Have we actually heard something about the timeline yet? Will we go on until Cleopatra's reign?

Hey, you could do all kinds of things there. I mean, how about a driving sim for driving a chariot? ;)

Chariots were introduced to the Egyptians by the Hyksos. I don't think that something so inovative to warfare will be overlooked by the developers.

Yeah, I had the choice of going to Egypt, or moving to the US. I moved. ;) One day I WILL get to Egypt! I swear I will!

Keith - I chuckled over your lwording there - introduced is such a nice way to say they used it while defeating em soundly in battle!

For those who haven't actually looked at an Egyptian wr chariot, here is one - sadly a bad view of the business end of it.
http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/chariots.htm
It is an insane contraption - so fragile yet so effective. They literally took their lives in their hands driving them - and remember, there was a charioteer and archer/javelin thrower in each. I want one! :D

The nice thing about these very light contrations was of course, that you could put it right side up again yourself if you managed to crash it. I doubt one would have been able to do so with a Hyksos chariot.

Of course, their roles in battle appear to have been compeltely different. The one used as shock assault weapon, the other as missle platform.

Keith

Some of the difference between the Hyksos and Etyptian chariots was due tot he fact that wood was very scarce in Egypt so they tended to use very little wood to make their chariiots, which probably influenced they way they were used in battle.
