Hello.

I seam not to be able to install CoTN on my Windows Xp x64 Pro at all!

I have gone through the installation setup as recommended on the CoTH, ie with the services chech and the dcom config. All ok. I have also Firewall and virus check off.

The error comes on initialization of the InstallShield Wizard. Fault: "The operating system is not adequate for running Immortal Cities".

Any ideas. Or can i just forget about running CoTN on my x64?

(DXDIAG included)

Thanks

From what I know so far about xp 64bit is that there ought to be a possibility to switch between 64 and 32
Do have a look into the Help-stuff that comes along with.

You don't happen to have anything like Daemon Tools installed on your system do you? SecuROM will block the install on to any system with Daemon Tools installed on it. If you do, you'll have to remove the Daemon Tools. Other similar software can cause similar error messages.

If not, have you tried installing the game from a Safe Mode reboot?

Removed Daemon Tools, did the reboot, unfortunately no good. As far as i can see / know (also did a help search) there is no way in Xp 64-bit to go into a 'speciel 32-bit' mode, nor to use a 'speciel' 32-bit installer.

I will try with the safe-mode asap :-)

Have read a small bit on issues like this... Supposedly windowsVista should be able to handle this... but don't bet on it. MS is having a heck of a lot of difficulty keeping up with the world on releasing Win Vista ... that they may manage to out do Apple on postponed release of a new OS. (remember OSX being about a year and a half late on initial release - except the server version ... to claim they made deadline)

Keep your Win 2KPro/Server Installation or Win XP (32) installation (preferably PRO) up and functional for the next few years. Vista will likely be a disaster when it first comes out for the consumer. For some reason Microsoft is trying to get it right for a change ... this means their old OS errors (which your software was designed for) are contrary to the new OS they have been building... Thats the summary from a few folks i know who have a bit of a inner scoop on Vista.

You could also use a dual boot config with win2K or XP Pro (32) on a separate partition/drive than your XP (64)

BTW win 2K Server rocks as a workstation instalation... rock solid and more robust than Xp pro or regular Win 2k ... in my experience.
<<you can get it to trickle down to a crawl ... but it will keep on slugging it out where Win 2k and XP will long ago have blue screened on you>>
k ... in some ways i'm twisted ... but i love it for now

I was just told that one can change in BIOS between win64bit and win32bit.
Can you confirm generik?

I tried the installation in SAFE MODE. But windows does not allow the installer to run... Warning:
1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime.

Tried a freeware app installation .exe reported that either miy installer was defect or i was in safe mode. Hence it could not do an installation.

Has anyone else completed the CoTN installation in Win SAFE MODE?

Manni, how would the BIOS have anything to do with the windows boot? Two different things...

But there is a BIOS option called: 32bit Data Transfer which is disabled by default. This is for the IDE decides though...

Well you see I was just following/passing on a hint I had from a technichan.
Therefore I thought with XPwin64bit there is an option in bios to change between 64 and 32..........just for installing-matters :)

The Safe Mode should be tried when all else fails. This prevents the loading of many of the background processes and apps that a normal startup loads that could be interfering with the application.

This can help with fussy installs that seem to fail.

If nothing else, it doesn't hurt to try it.

I did try. I started the installer in safe mode and it came up with the previously indicated fault. Hence i asked if anybody else had tried installing via Safe Mode. I was definetely not able to install anything!

Damn, i wish i could play CoTN!!! I must say, i havn't had any problems with other games on the win x64. But a couple of appz. Most systems recognize it as a Windows 2003 server system. And i must say, it is a lot more stable than Win Xp + 2k! I have no crash problems (except while i OC a little to much) and the OS is really, really fast, both networking and locally!

But it is a pity with the driver and recourse compatibility.

Have you tried running the installer under the Windows Compatability wizard? Open the CD and find the executable installer file, and then right click on it, select Properties, then the Compatability tab. Set the mode to one of the choices. Click APPLY and OK. Then double left click on the installer executable on the CD to to run it. (Don't run the install from the Autostart menu that pops up when you put the CD in the drive.)

Hello Keith

Have never seen that feature before. Thanks for info. I am afraid that the same fault appears though. "The operating system is not adequate for running Immortal Cities"...

Damn :-(

Hmm.... I looked around and InstallShield community support has this:

SYMPTOMS

When you use InstallShield Express - Visual FoxPro Limited Edition to create an install package for a specific operating system (OS), and you want to target your application for installation to the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, you notice that this option is not available when you get to Step 5 (Define Setup Requirements and Actions) of the process. When you click to select Windows 2000 as a workaround to permit installation on Windows XP, and you try to install your distribution on a Windows XP system, you receive the following error message. The operating system is not adequate for running <AppName>.

So I guess you can't on XP64, because it's not a supported OS in the installer being used. I'm guessing you already tried the Windows 2000 mode in the compatability wizard.

Jeps i tried using the Win 2k compatability option for the installer.. Nothing but the same error :-(

Any chance of getting another installer from Tilted Mill?

Probably not. But you never know. It doesn't hurt to ask.
