According to your DxDiag file you have a graphic chip that is not supported by the game. I'd suggest buying a graphics card. It doesn't have to be one of the new expensive ones, but if I've read the file correctly it needs to be an AGP card and not one of the new PCI-Express cards.
A little bit more RAM wouldn't hurt either, but it's not the most pressing issue here.

Even with a new graphics card there may be a problem running the game. Your AC97 audio chip may not work well with the game and it may require that you also get a soundcard as well.
Plus, you have a 256MB system running Windows XP, which is the minimum required for the game under XP and that may give you problem with larger maps in the game.
The game requires DirectX 9 compliant hardware.
Minimum:
Pentium® III or Athlon® 800 MHz processor or higher
Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP operating system
128 MB of RAM (256 MB required for Windows® XP)
1.1 GB uncompressed free hard drive space
A 100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP-compatible computer system including:
DirectX® 9.0b
100% DirectX® 9-compliant true 16 bit sound card and drivers
100% DirectX® 9-compliant 32 MB video card and drivers
100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP -compatible mouse and drivers
100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP -compatible keyboard
100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP -compatible quad speed (600 K/sec sustained transfer rate) CD-ROM drive and driversRecommended:
Pentium® 4 or Athlon® 2.0 GHz processor
512 MB of RAM
64 MB video card will full Direct 9.0 support

He has a Sound Blaster Live! audio system. I'm not sure if it is a chipset or a card. Either way it is a bit out of date and the drivers are old.
The fact that he only has 0.1GB free space on his C: drive could be a factor, even if the game is not installed on it. His computer probably doesn't have much "breathing room" for caching and other system functions.

:) Thanks for the help so far guys :) I seem to be able to play now!!!
As you can see from the updated attached file, ive updated my drivers to the 81.95 suggested. cotn is saved on my F drive but ive cleared c drive up a bit.
Ive tryed installing direct X 9.0c and it seems to install fine but then doesnt appear to be when i look for it. strange! (not sure what is going on there - any idears?!)
Ive changed my page file to 'system managed size' - is that the best thing to do? Im not sure what to do about the RAM as increasing this would invove buying and chip/card - wouldnt it? As you can prop see im not very technical and wouldnt have a clue what to do in tht respect!
well at least i seem to be able to play at the mo but any further adv to make my game run better would be great. cheers

Your dxdiag file still show that you are running DX 9.0b and not c. Looks like the update install didn't take.
1.1GB free space on C: is better but you may want to try for a bit more.
It may be better to establish a fixed size rather than let the system decide, because the system may want to make the space larger than 1.1GB and won't be able to do so. A fixed size reportedly allows your system to function more smoothly because the system isn't constantly making adjustments to the file size up and down.
You can make the page file size anywhere between 2x to 3x times the size of your physical RAM. So page file maximum size of 512 or 756MB would be OK.
