I purchased and downloaded COTN from IGN today and the game constantly crashes when I toggle to the desktop (CTRL-ESC). I downloaded the complete patch (37MB) but it will not apply. I get an error message saying: cotn.exe unknown version. I tried downloading just the 1.0 to 1.2 patch but get the same error message.

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Normally you ALT+TAB to get the desktop.

You probably have the fully patched version if you just got the game today. Unfortunately, there is now way to tell for certain since the version numver of the game wasn't updated when they created the patch.

In short, you probably don't need the patch.

My game crashes, too, when holding Ctrl-Esc. :) If you wanna go back to desktop and keep the game running, you have to press Alt-Tab. Then it should work. :D ;)
Edit: Ah, sorry. Keith has already said so. :o

Well, I did the ALT-TAB and that crashes it too. Seems if I leave the active game screen it just does not like that.

I'm a little concerned about the fact that I cannot apply a patch (maybe I do need it?) to this file because of its copyright modifications. Shouldn't IGN have been made aware of this before distributing the game for download purchase?

The game will behave differently on each system depending on the resources your computer has. I can ALT+TAB on my system without problems, but on some machines this may not be possible due to fewer system resources. The game may become unstable and crash, as in your case.

You may want to try to run the game in the windowed mode. See this thread:
