View Full Version : Anyone else with "logout" problems?

I've already mentioned it privately, but I'm curious if it is just me or if anyone else is having a minor problem logging out here.

When I logout I always get a message saying that there was a problem logging me out and I need to click on the supplied text link to logout. When I do I get a message saying "all cookies cleared". When I come back the board "remember me" function doesn't work and I must re-enter my name and password.

Anyone else?

I don't have the 'logout' problem you describe, with Mozilla 1.6 on Linux I directly get the "cookies cleared" page when I choose to log out. Which browser/version are you using? Do you have any unusual security settings enabled or something like that?
When I come back the board "remember me" function doesn't work and I must re-enter my name and password.
That's just what you logged out for, isn't it? Logging out removes all traces of you ever being logged in, so the 'remember me' function shouldn't work (and thus doesn't work).

No, logging out should merely show me as off the board not wipe out my cookie file. When I come back the "remember me" function should already show my name and password in the supplied boxes, which it doesn't.

Depends on the type of 'logging out' the forum performs.
On very few forums, it works like you describe (I haven't seen much forums acting like that). On this type of forum (and most others I've seen), the 'remember me' is an 'auto-login' feature: it logs you in automatically when you visit the board again. This information is removed when you log out: you're logged out when you leave the forum (thus the forum software knows nothing about your identity), so you stay logged out when you visit again. So: "it's a feature, not a bug!" ;)

By the way, something that I noticed: why do you quote an entire post every time, while you reply only to one sentence or paragraph of said post? Is it that much trouble to remove the redundant parts?

Nope. I believe it was the intetion that the logout feature erases your cookies, and thus if someone else were to use your computer, the board would not "remember you", and they wouldn't be able to abuse your account. I believe what you are describing is the correct functionality.

EDIT: Hmmm, I guess I should read the whole thread before replying to certain posts, as it seems Pecunia has already beat me to the explanation. :)

The question there is if you don't logout does the board know you are no longer connected if you just close the browser. I don't believe it does.

If the board doesn't automatically put my name and password back in to the login boxes, that sort of makes the "remember me" feature worthless. To remember me it would require a cookie file. If the cookie is being wiped each time I log out then the feature not going to work.

Methinks someone needs to read up on netiquette, especially the parts about 'quoting' and 'signature'

Indeed, it does not. It only registers you as being off-line, when you don't access any pages on the forums for a certain amount of time.

If the board doesn't automatically put my name and password back in to the login boxes, that sort of makes the "remember me" feature worthless. To remember me it would require a cookie file. If the cookie is being wiped each time I log out then the feature not going to work.

Nor is it supposed to work when you log out. That's the definition of logging out - resetting the "remember me" feature, if you want to put it that way.

Well, I don't agree and won't debate it with you. The point is that when I go to log out I always get a error message and have to click on a second link to actually accomplish the task. What I'm asking is, does anyone else get the same error message?

EDIT: Never mind. Deleted upon further reflection. :)

I just tried it, and I first got a confirmation dialog, that asked if I wanted to log out, and when I clicked "Yes", it gave me the "All Cookies Cleared" page, so no - no error here.

If you close the browser, or surf elsewhere, or just sit idle for a while, then the board will know you are no longer online.

The only reason to ever logout is if other people use your computer.

As I said in my first message: no I don't have the problem, but what kind of browser are you using, and do you have any unusual security options enabled, or have any programs running that might interfere (think about cookie managers, a proxy, popup blockers, spyware checkers and the like)? This info might pin the problem down, if some other users also have the same problem, but you seem to have failed to notice my question.

Ok, good. I was logging out so as not to appear "online" in the list of users when I wasn't actually there.

I've alreadly checked for these obvious items. No cookie manager or no proxy in use. The logout doesn't bring up a popup and I've checked my blocker incase it did. My spyware program only runs when manually started and doesn't fillter incoming items automatically.

I just won't bother logging out since the board does detect inactivity.
