View Full Version : Likely to work?

Realise this must be annoying so I apologise in advance. (Also not sure if this is the right forum to ask in, or if there even is a good forum for that sort of thing.)
I'm thinking of having someone get me this game for Christmas, but I want to be sure it'll run first.
Demo runs fine, I have a strong enough processor, 512ram might be a bit low, but given the requirements I think it should work, I checked the supported videocards and mine should work (Radeon 9200, latest drivers), though it seems some people have weird issues with it.
Possible problems: no standalone audiocard (Realtek AC97), the dvd-writer came with the computer (hp) so probably as generic as they come, and from what I've read, generic dvd-drives can cause a lot of problems with the disk-protection schemes. There might be other problems I'm unaware of.
Given this, is the game likely to run? I don't want to waste someone's money on something if it probably won't even work, so I thought I'd ask.

Thank you, Phil Walker. :)
I've seen that before Keith (and I thought it would've been quite obvious, as I mentioned something about that in the first post... )

Hello Hanna,
as Phil has mentioned..........do run a "dxdiag" on your pc, which means directX-diagnosis.
Here is how to do that: (it is easier than peeling a potatoe)
Click START then RUN and type dxdiag and click OK.
Wait until the program is fully loaded and save the result to a folder on your computer.
Come back here and upload that file to your message via the MANAGE ATTACHMENTS button below the text box area where you type your message.
UPLOAD the dxdiag.txt-file and submit your message.
Afterwards it should be there for all to look into.

Thanks, that explains it. I'd never heard of "dxdiag" before (though I'd seen it mentioned here a few times) so I was wondering if it was something that came with the game or if it came with windows or what it was. :p

Hello Hanna. You shouldn't have problems running CotN. One or two little tings you may look before installing it are :
-make sure your hard drive has enough free space for the game and after game installation
-defrag it
-install the Windows service pack 2.

I'll do that, thanks for the tips. (Though I'll try it without installing SP2 first and only get it if I have to.)
And thanks for the help everyone. :)

SP2 is only for security reasons, not for the game. ;)

Hehe
The fact that you can't get newer security updates is bad of course (really bad), but I *really* don't like the idea of something changing all kinds of settings without asking, probably fetching all sorts of information from my computer (much like spyware :p), and possibly screwing the install up completely forcing me to wipe the hd and reinstall windows, isn't very appealing. Perhaps it's better now than when it first came out though... I don't use ie or outlook (which cause most problems) but I really should get a firewall again.
