I noticed on the home page that one can "download patch". What does this patch do and how do I know if I need it please.

If you own the game, then you need it. The patch fixes many issues and will make the game experience much more enjoyable. Download it and follow the directions...

P.S. Almost all PC games will need/have a patch created after-market. It's just the way they do things.
