I just bought the game today, and when I put it in the CD-ROM, nothing happens. Double-clicking the drive just brings up "Please insert a disc into this drive." I can't get any further than that. I attached the Dxdiag, although I don't know anything about what it says. I hope someone can help, but I'm thinking I need a new CD-ROM drive - hopefully that's what it is. We were planning on getting a new one anyway.

Thanks!
Rose

Hopefully you did not buy it on eBay. There are countefeit copies from Russia being sold there.

Make sure that your placing the CD in the same drive the game was installed from when you want to play the game.

Are you using a XP account with administrator priviledges or one of the limited user accounts? You will need administrator priviledges.

If you bought this at a normal retail shop, then the problem may be that your CD drives are giving SecuROM, the game's copy protection software, a problem. Some brands and models of brands are not compliant with the industry standards. Your drivers for them look to be up to date, however, so updating them probably won't fix your problem.

You may need a new CD drive, at that.

Other problems you may run into later after you get the game to start:

Your Nvidia audio drivers are a little old and may need updating.

Your Nvidia video drivers may or may not have a problem with the game. Until recently it has been recommended that Nvidia users uninstall newer drivers and install the older 61.77 driver. There has been a release of a new 71.84 driver as of yesterday, and some of the reports I have seen elsewhere that it fixes many problems of the more recent versions.

Hi Keith,

I bought the game brand new at a retail store, so no worries there. The thing is that I can't get it to install...it won't recognize the disc at all. When I put it in the drive, it shows that there is nothing there. :(

I do have administrator priviledges, and yes, it is Wondows XP.

So it must be that the CD-ROM is not compatible with the game? That would be your guess? I did see the note about Nvidia, and I will update that driver tomorrow...just was hoping I could get the game installed first.

Thanks for your help! :)

Does the drive recognize any other CDs you put in it? If not it may be a bad drive or a bad driver file.

If it does recognize other CDs, then it must be the SecuROM and CD driver file causing the problems.

You may be able to download a firmware update from the drive manufacturer's website.

If none of that is an option then a new drive may be what you need.

One last place you can check into for SecuROM related issues is actually a tech support site for World of Warcraft. The people there have a nice set of 12 pages to walk you through analyzing a problem with a drive and SecuROM. Even though the site refers to their game, the info is good for just about any game.

Just a suggestion did you try installing through your DVD drive?

Also it could be a defect on the CD. I would try it on another comp.

Or try cleaning the CD very carefully...

Yes, the drive does recognize other CDs, it's just COTN that isn't recognized.

Since we were planning on getting a new drive anyway, I think we'll just go that route. We're looking at a Pioneer A09XL 16x DVR drive. Is there anywhere I can check to see if SecuROM is compatible with this drive? I'll go check the other thread you mentioned again just incase.

The DVD drive on our computer is broken, so I can't install there. I doubt it's the CD - the drive is really old, so I'm guessing that's it. :)

If anyone has info about the new drive and SecuROM I'd greatly appreciate it, otherwise I'll let you know when/if it works!

The new CD-ROM works fine, and so does the game now! Thanks everyone. :)
