Hi all :)
I have this issue but with an ATI 9800PRO 128mb, with the latest drivers. All of my games run properly but CoTN makes this strange refresh issue.
The effects of this issue are exactly the same of this topic: http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5792
Please, don't tell me that I have to downgrade my card drivers... I think that a proper game does not require this strange method... a patch may be a better solution, in my modest opinion...
Thank you!

If you've tried what's been said in the other thread... Can you attach your dxdiag?

I can't attach my dxdiag at the moment, I'm at work and at home I don't have internet... :(
So I'll have to attach it tomorrow. Anyway, my DirectX version is 9.0c, installed directly from the CoTN cd, and tested with other games like UT2004, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Doom 3... and they worked flawlessly, without refresh issues like this.
Thanks for answering... maybe any other members could help me?

It was more for your drivers. As said in the other thread, some noewest ones may cause problems with CotN...

It seems clear that is something about the graphic drivers... but I think that a patch is almost obligatory from Tilted Mill or Sega...
I am not spending 44 euros in a game that require this strange solution... If a game is well designed and coded, it can never have issues like this... If other games would have this kind of issues, the final user would be sick of changing graphic drivers... let's be serious, this is not the way to get things working...
So it's not a fault of the drivers, it's a fault of the game's code.

I run ATi drivers 5.2 now, which are the most current, and they do well with CotN. So no need to downgrade, BUT make sure (dxdiag) that the driver installed correctly! ATi drivers tend to get mixed up in the system, depending on whatever-we-don't-know so you might think that you have the version a.b in your system, but actually it is a mixture of several drivers, which in most cases causes games to crash or misbehave. There nothing TM could do against that.

Well, you see.... other games do have this kind of issues with drivers too. But I've got to admit, it would be great if this driver problem could get fixed. I don't care if it's done by TM with a patch somehow or with a new version of working driver from ATI/NVidia.

Moste of the time, people will complain about the game. I can remeber a fewtimes, when the driver released was the problem, and not the games.
Anyway, could they make it easier to update drivers, some of the problem would be solved...

Yeah, or maybe they can release a patch for the refresh issue, it's not so difficult...
What it seems incredible is that there's no way to change the refresh rate in the cotn.ini file... In almost every game I own there's a way to manually change the refresh rate. And there's no option to do it in CoTN...
Making graphic drivers is way far more complicated than releasing a patch that would correct this...

To all concerned, (not to the ones that do it the right way)
Tobing is right, the latest ATI-CATALYST Graphic-Driver Version 5.2 suits CotN well on XP-systems.............it seems, at least on some pc´s so far.
The Version 5.2 for XP is only out since 9th of February 2005.
BEFORE its release people with ATI-cards and XP were advised to use the Catalyst 4.11 which proved to be most stable and solid with many CotN-gamers and has worked well.
If for some unknown reason some gamers STILL keep having troubles & crashes, the reason must not necesseraly be the driver version X or Z itself but "could" also be a mess up of all sorts of things. (mixture of driver-dll`s, page-file, free space, a.s.o.)
The majority of users tries to "avoid" the nasty up/downdate of drivers and just "press thumbs" when installing.
This needn`t have to be so!
If they`d take the time once and read their way through the ATI-HELP & FAQ`s & HOW UN/INSTALLING DRIVER CORRECT there would be less problems and the whole thing is REALLY easier than one would think.
ATI also supplies the users with an UNINSTALLER-Tool, which makes sure, that all old left-overs from UNinstalling a previous driver are defenitively out!
To do an Un-and-Install of a graphic-driver the best and safest way is nothing scary......when done once in the right order. It`s certainly harder to milk a cow........:D.........I think.

Kindgott, as mentioned above there should be no reason that a properly isntalled driver for your ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (same as my card) should not work.
I udated my original ATI drivers. which came on the computer in June 2003, back in August of 2004 and have been using that driver version since then and I have no problems here. I'm using driver version 4.10. Mouse is using drivers from July 2004, 4.5, IIRC. Others are using newer versions as stated above.
None of us are having your problem.
