Okay, whenever I try to close CotN, to do something else, or just to take a break, I get a system error. My sister has just bought the computer that she's running the game on, and while not a high end system, I would think that it would be able to run fine. The errors are anything from a windows crash to just an error, which usually results in having to restart the computer.

I looked around a bit to see if there was anything that would resemble my problem, both in the support section and this part of the board, and I couldn't find anything. So any ideas on what the problem is?

Thanks.

The Intel Graphics Adapter is one builtin to the motherboard and is not the best for playing CotN. TM mentioned that you can probably play CotN with one, but at reduced performance levels. You may have to lower your video settings in the game to minimums or levels where the problem doesn't occur.

If you keep having this problem, you may have to investigate getting a newer more capable graphics card for the computer from ATI or Nvidia (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showpost.php?p=34204&postcount=6).

Otherwise your computer looks to be more than capable of running CotN, with a P4 2.8Ghz processor. You might want to consider changing the maximum PAGE FILE setting to 1536 from it's present 997 setting. This may help smooth things out slightly but probably won't fix your crashing problem.

To change the page file setting, click on the Start/Control Panel. Select Performance and Maintenance. Then click on System and the Advanced tab. Under the Performance section click on the Settings button. Then click on the next Advanced tab. In the Virtual Memory section click on the Change button. I the Custom Size section set the maximum setting to 1536 (3x your 512M RAM). Click Set. Click OK, APPLY, and OK. Rerboot.

I have a similar problem in that I cannot exit from CotN. The Leave Egypt does not work and I have to reboot by manually switching off. Apart from that the program runs fine. More of an annoyance really. :)

Interesting you are running Windows 2000 Pro, are you running on a network, or as a workstation? Since, thats what it was designed for.

I used to run 2000 Pro and it can be very quirky. If there is not a specific need to use that as an OS Operating System, I might suggest switching to Windows XP. If you did so, you might see some mildily pleasant increases in overall performance.

Since the game itself is running fine, save for the EXIT function, then I would suggest that you uninstall and reinstall the game. You may have a bad or corrupted file or just have a bad install. See how that goes first.

If you haven't done a cleanup and defrag lately, it might be a good time to do it before you reinstall the game.

I have the same exact problem when I exit the game. The music from the game will still be playing and the screen will look all funky like it's in safe mode and I'll get a message saying a graphics driver ialmrnt5.dll crashed. When I close that I get a message asking if I want to send an error report. It doesn't matter if I send or not, the whole system will freeze up and I have to manually shut the computer down.

I just bought this computer last week. It's a Sony Vaio.

you might want to add to your dxdiag. people may need more detail on your system.

Machine is not on a network. I have not seen the need to upgrade yet as W2K has always worked fine for me. Runs Sim City 4, Warcraft III and others with no problem.

System is auto-defragged every day using Diskeeper Pro. May try a reinstall if I get really hacked off with it. Then again, may run it 24/7 ;)

Thanks for the response.

All OK now! Before playing I had been shutting down the Apache Monitor but not the Apache Service (used locally for testing web sites). Stopping the service has cured the problem.

I'm glad to hear you found the culprit. I would not have guessed you had such a app on your system, so it would not occur to me to have you disable it specifically. ;)

Here is my dxdiag. Can someone tell me why my computer goes ape when I exit? :D

ahh, so it was a network related interruption....
glad you figured it out :)

The only thing that draws my attention on your dxdiag file is that you have a Intel graphic controller chipset builtin to the motherboard more than likely. TM says that the Intel graphic controllers can run the game but they are not the best and users may have experience decreased performance. I see you are allready at 800x600 and 60Hz.

Evidently the exit proceedure for the game is calling up something that your graphics system doesn't like. What that might be is hard to say.

Is your computer a desktop or a laptop? Just curious....

Ok, I just wanted to know because recommending a video card for laptops is a tricky prospect. However, new your system is, a better graphics system would be worth checking in to. I would highly recommend a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, which is what I use.

However, I can't promise that this will fix your problem, and that there is not something else there somewhere on your computer interfering with the game function needed to exit the game properly.

Have you tried the old Windows ALT+F4 to terminate the game just to see if you still crash?

Mine crashes on Exit too. Sorry at work, can't post diag notes.

Anyway a quick run down, both have XPproSP2 latest patches and BOTH pc's will crash on exit...

P4 3.0gig, X800 pro 4.12 drivers, 4xaa8xaf, 1gig RDRAM, Audigy 2
P4 1.7gig, 9700 pro 5.3 drivers, 2xaa4xaf, 1 gig SDRAM, SB Live

Given those specs and the fact that both crash upon exiting I'm going to guess that you have some program installed and running on both computers that CotN doesn't like. Try turning off all unnecessry programs when you run the game and see if this solves your problem....if it does then it will just be a matter of isolating which program it is. :D Hope you get everything worked out.

Well nothing comes to mind, the P4 3gig is strictly dedicated to games, no internet/web access (turned on for updates only), no Antivirus, no spam tools, no office, no email, basically it's windows xp and drivers for hardware, and of course games. Kotor 2 and CotN at the moment.

without the DxDiag files it is nearly impossible to find out what might cause the trouble.

However, you might wanna try to turn off AA and AF. Might help.
