View Full Version : NVidia card owners use 61.77 July 2004 drivers...

Instead of constantly repeating this over and over again everytime someone says they have a problem with their Nvidia card and CotN, I thought I would give it a thread all its own.
If you own a Nvidia card and experience trouble with CotN either with graphics or the game closing down check the driver version you have. If it is not 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) then download 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) and uninstall your current drivers. Then install 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) drivers.
In most cases the July 2004 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) drivers have corrected or fixed most problems with NVidia card graphics and CotN.
You can check your driver version from the DXDIAG utlity by clicking on the Display tab. The last four digits of the driver version are the numbers which we are talking about. So if you have anything newer, like 66.93 or 66.96 and have problems you probably need to use the 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) drivers.
Click on START, then RUN, and type dxdiag in the box. Click OK. Click on the Display tab and look for the driver version number the last 4 digits are the one you want to compare.
If you have saved your results in a dxdiag.txt file then examin the display adapter section for the follwing line:
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6693 (English)
The above indicates the isntalled version is the more problematic 66.93 version.
Download the 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) drivers. Uninstall your current driver. Then install the 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) drivers. Reboot.

People having problems with the graphics in CotN and owning a Nvidia graphics card use the following drivers:
Windows XP/2K:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77.html)
Windows ME/98:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_53.04.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_53.04.html)
I haven't confirmed it yet, but the following info may apply to certain Nvidia cards when used with CotN:
Pixel Shaders is a hardware feature and is only supported by certain Geforce and Quadro NVIDIA based graphic cards. The following list of NVIDIA based graphic cards do not support Pixel Shaders (all other cards support this feature):
NVIDIA Riva 128
NVIDIA Riva TNT
NVIDIA Riva TNT2 M64/TNT2/TNT2 Pro/TNT2 Ultra
NVIDIA Vanta
NVIDIA Geforce256 DDR/SDR
NVIDIA Geforce2 GTS/Pro/Ultra/Ti200
NVIDIA Geforce2 MX/MX100/MX200/MX400
NVIDIA Geforce4 MX/MX4000
NVIDIA Quadro
NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro
NVIDIA Quadro NVS
NVIDIA Quadro4 280XGL/380XGL/550XGL

I can get the game to load, I can hear the music, but I can't see the main screen to go anywhere. It loads fine, the intro graphics play beautifully, then a black signing screen.

my whole computer crashed after I try to install them (after the reboot the computer stacks until I return to last configuration)
do you have other solutions? maybe other than Nvidia drivers source?

I've been waiting for awhile now for a fix to this issue. Telling all of the people with NVidia cards that they have to install older drivers is not a fix for an issue. Get in touch with the people at NVidia if you haven't yet, and work with them to come out with a new patch, or for them to add any fix they need to before they come out with another driver update. I have other games that DO NOT work with older drivers, because of patchs that the game companies have put out (most of them MMO's, so I can't go back to an old patch to play those game)
Oh, BTW, this is a great game. I have been playing it. I just hate having to swap drivers every time I want to play CotN or one of the other games I have that needs newer drivers. :)
Keith
02-27-2005, 07:10 PM
There's not much Tilted Mill can do about Nvidia drivers not working, so the ball is in Nvidia's "court", so to say.
As you suggest, putting the pressure on Nvidia is probably the only way the problem will get addressed.
All TM and the rest of us here can do is recommend drivers that reportedly work with CotN.

I agree fully. Would be kind if a small hotfix would be released... :o
Keith

Yeah, well, like I said, Nvidia should get on the ball and make a fix then. It is obviously their problem since their much older driver works and the newer ones don't.

From what I've read in another Forum, CotN is not the only one that has problems with the latest NVidia drivers. They should really try to improve the next version.

Beta drivers in Nvidia site however have the same problem with COTN.

There strong evidence that the new drivers 5.2 will also work with CotN. This has been reported by some members of our forum http://www.staedtebauen.de. I have yet to verify this on my own PC...

Tobing is right.
I know of two gamers with ATI-cards who play CotN (German version) with the latest ATI-Catalyst-driver 5.2 , and no problems at all so far.

Man, this is a bummer. I used to play this game and really enjoyed it, now I download the latest patch, and the game wont' run right unless, while playing, I minimize the game menu. Works fine if the menu is minimize, but maximize it to make some selections and the graphics go wierd on me. Whatever was done with the latest patch, take it out where graphics are concerned. Latest NVidia drivers don't work, and I certainly ain't going backwards.
Bummer.

It is possible that your have a corrupted game file and it just appeared now after you installed the patch.
The first thing to do is to uninstall the game, cleanup and defrag your hard drive, then reinstall the game and the patch. See if that works for you.
If not, post your dxdiag.txt file so we can see what hardware and driver versions you are currently using.

What game screen resolution are you running in? If it is as high as your desktop setting 1440 x 900, you might want to try setting the in-game video setting to something lower like 1024 x 768. Try the 16-bit modes too.
Your current Nvidia driver is 51.04. You may want to download and try a newer version, like 61.77 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) which has proven to be very stable with CotN. There is a newer 71.84 driver just released yesterday that "reportedly" fixes many problems that drivers after 61.77 had.
If you decide to try another driver version, download the file. Then uninstall your old Nvidia driver, then install the new driver. Do not just install the new driver over the old one.
You may want to make a backup restore point before trying anything at all.
You may also want to do this in the SAFE MODE.

Keith, I don't think CarrieThompson can use the 61.77 drivers since she's using a laptop. If I am correct she needs to check out the laptop manufacturer's site for other drivers.

Concerning below, I believe the real problem is that I updated my driver for the NVidia to play other games, and there are too many of them for me to go back to the old drivers for just this one (a real bummer). I did try the re-install. The game works perfectly, unless I open up the Interace Menus (which I must to play). With them closed, I can scroll all over the map and the graphics are perfect, but once the interface is opened everything goes to Hell.
As I said, I am simply can't be changing drivers backwards to play one game. Whether we like it or not, NVidea won't care if any of us can play this game, so you folks need to help us NVidea owners, if you would. Assuming you plan on releasing other games, it seems it is in your interest, although a pain in the butt, to create the patch from your end to fix NVidea's mess.
It was a good game, it really is a shame NVidea had to screw it up.
Thanks
Bill

I just tried the latest NVidia driver (Version 71.84) and so far it seems to work well with CotN. I haven't experienced any lock ups or graphical errors so far. But I haven't let it run for long yet.
Maybe - with some luck - people won't need to downgrade anymore. :)
BTW Keith: on the German NVidia site they did make the distinction between the laptop cards and desktop cards. They actually said that the mobile products are not supported by the NVidia drivers. :)

Yep, it does say that, but you have to look for it to find it. I found it near the bottom of this tech support page (http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=71&p_created=1097180486&p_sid=mFmCKlAh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9MTQ5JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9c2VhcmNoX2ZubCZ wX3Byb2RfbHZsMT0yJnBfY2F0X2x2bDE9JnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc 2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9Z3JhcGhpY3MgZHJpdmVyIGZvciBmeCBnbyA 1NjAw&p_li=) at a "NOTE."
Unfortunately, the HP site (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=384807&lang=en&cc=us&os=228), offers a driver update dated January 9, 2004, which is older than the one that Carrie already has. The other driver "update" offered is even older, dated August 18, 2003.

But recently, I had downloaded a ton of demos, just to see what new racing game was coming out. Man! COTN loaded up in like two seconds last night, as opposed to the 30 or 40 seconds last week! Amenirdis

Nope, definitely not, because NVidia doesn't 'make' the drivers for the laptops. They always refer to the manufacturer of the laptop for drivers. However... I don't know how frequently the manufacturers offer new versions.
I'm not sure if you even get an error message if you try to install a driver made for desktop graphic cards. I don't own a laptop yet so I can't try it out. ;)
I'm sorry. :(

Don't tell me you are a Nascar freak. ;) With Papyrus gone from VuG/Sierra, they gave up the rights to Nascar Racing games, which is now being produced by EA Sports, IIRC. I'm not a big racing fan but I do have a couple of the Nascar games that I tried for a while.

No, your "Go" card is not supported according to the note I found at the bottom of the compatability list. Laptops allways see to get short shrift in the support departments. I checked HP, and the ones they have for your laptop are even older than the one you currently have.

When I installed the game, I had NVidia's 66.93 drivers loaded. I turned everything in Options to Low or Off. Once in the game (Learn to play) although I doubts where in the game I start... The tree's flicker. If I move forward, they leave a trail with them. It takes about 5-10 seconds for it to stop and the trail of trees leave. Totally un-playable this way.
I had read on here about the Newest drivers 71.84 and got those installed. Same problem.
Video card is GeForce 5200 PCI. Running WinXP P3 800. 512 RAM.
I called Myelin Tech Support, all they could suggest was to downgrade my Video Drivers to 61.77. That won't happen...Not for one game, when all my other games run great. :(
I can only wait for another NVidia driver to be released that works, or for Tilted Mill to offer a Patch as a fix.
And I was soooo looking forward to playing this...

Most other games run just fine with the older 61.77 drivers. You should really give it a try. What have you got to lose? If you don't like it you can upgrade the drivers in a minute again.

I don't think to downgrade drivers should be a problem, usually drivers' upgrade is recommended only if you have problems with actual drivers, so if your other applications work well I would try.

CotN runs perfectly fine for me with both 61.77 and 71.84. However... for the majority here the 61.77 work best and without problems at all. And I've been playing other (new) games with that version for a long time without problems, either.

For those, like me, who have GeForce 6600 GT, only 71.84 will work because 61.xx don't support those card, too recent.

I just put in a GeoForce 6600 GT video card. It won't work with the 61.77 driver and the game does not work properly for me with the latest one (71.84).
I have a Pentium 4 3.2 gig processor, running 1 gig of ram, with a 200 gig hard drive (mostly free), and the game freezes my system (must re-boot to get out), is choppy, hiccups, and generally runs very poorly (it crashes about every 10 -15 minutes, and occasionally will work consistently for about an hour before freezing up).
At this point, I don't think these problems can be blamed on Nvidia, but I welcome any suggestions.
Keith
04-12-2005, 02:21 PM
Please post a copy of your dxdiag.txt file. (I'm getting tired of repeating this.)
Actually the problems can be blame at least partially on Nvidia. It seems that their latest drivers are not very stable and the latest report seems to indicate that the new 71.84 drivers cause their cards GPU to overheat causing computers to crash or freeze. Recommendations have been to use older drivers.
When you installed the 61.77 drivers did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers you had already FIRST?
You should unisntall the previous driver before installing the next one.
Until we see your dxdiag.txt file there isn't much else we can say at this point.
The game runs beautifully on my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and computer system. So the problem either lies in your computer or your video card or drivers.
Frances
04-12-2005, 02:36 PM
Very happy that the game runs beautifully for you, however, it does not for me (and for many others it seems).
I will post my dxdiag when I get home, but I'm at my office now.
And yes, I did uninstall the 71.84 drivers before installing the 61.77 version. The driver will not work with this new card.
This appears to be a great game, but these problems are frustrating, and I've read most of the technical advice here already. My system is almost new having been rebuilt with new motherboard, cpu, memory, power supply and hard drive in January (with latest drivers being installed at that time) so I am not optimistic that something as simple as a sound card driver will fix this problem.
I look forward to any help you can give, though.
Keith
04-12-2005, 04:05 PM
The only reason I cited my system and the way the game runs is to show that there must be something on your end that is causing you your problems....not to rub it in.
It could very well be a driver or some other software you have installed causing a problem.
However, until you post a copy of your dxdiag.txt file we don't have any place from which to start helping you. Attach a copy of that file to your next reply in this thread.
Frances

Other than there have have been recent reports that the 71.84 drivers have been causing Nvidia cards to overheat and the recommendation there is to go back to older drivers, the only thing I noticed about your system is that you seem to have two active sound cards, a SB Live and C-Media.
You should try disabling or uninstalling the C-Media sound system.
You should update your SB Live driver to something a little more current. The most recent driver for SB Live is Feb 28, 2003 (http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download2.asp?Product_ID=4857&dlcentric=1926&Product_Name=Sound+Blaster+Live%21&OSName=Windows+XP). That's a link to the download page for the XP version of the driver.

Hmm, I thought the C-media system was disabled. I'll check it out.
When I had the new video card installed (last week in hopes of correcting this problem), the people doing the work installed the driver everyone here said was a problem (xx.93) so I uninstalled and added the newest driver, the 71.84. I did so because the game didn't run under the previous driver either. Same problems occurred.
Then I uninstalled the 71.84 and tried the 61.77 driver, but unfortunately that one doesn't work at all with this new card.
I will go ahead and update the SB driver, but I'm thinking this isn't going to help much.
I wish I'd known about the 6600 GT card before investing so much into it, and it'd be nice if Tilted Mill tried some patch to help those of us stranded in this situation. Otherwise, I suppose I'll have to wait until Nvidia takes care of their driver issues.

Interesting thread. Although I just PM'd Francis congratulating him on such a sweet card, my congratulations may have been premature. (I still want one- a fantastic card for the money.)
Lets assume that Francis has a good card.
Lets assume that there is something to do with drivers, settings or software.
After you resolve the dual sound issue, please try the following.
Turn off Fast write or similar utility.
Turn off an 'crash protection' or similar utility.
In Bios turn down AGP speed to 4x.
Does your machine run stable with things other than CotN? Can you run benchmark programs fine?
Keep us posted. Doing a google on the 6600 GT Drivers, does bring up some interesting posts.
[edit] RE 5200 & other driver issues. There is nothing TM can do other than write our code to MX DX specs. When Nvidea releases a new driver that works great with their DX9 series of cards but wreaks havoc on the 5200, whose fault is that? It is not like we are the only game company telling people with that card to stay with the drivers that were released shortly after that card was made. There is not a Nvidea card or ATI card that meets DX7 standards that does not play with CotN.

I'm still working on getting my system stable during game play, but I just downloaded the latest Nvidia driver, version 71.89, just released today, and it does seem to be doing better.
I also upgraded my SB drivers, and that too seems to be helping. I need to find out how to disable the C-Media sound card without deleting it, and then maybe the game will run without any crashes. I'm now getting over an hour of gameplay without a system crash with the new drivers, but alas, crashes still happen. Still, this is significantly better than it was a few days ago.

I'd like to report that the newest 71.89 drivers released on April 14th 2005 seem to have resolved the classic smearing issue. I have an FX5200 card. Perhaps others will have a good experience with these drivers. Good Luck! :D

Regarding this whole "NVIDIA Card" problem, does the 1.2 (US Version) patch help or hinder?
Okay, so it's an odd question, but I just installed COTN (US retail version)about 4 hours ago, and- aside from having to "kick start" the installation for some odd reason- the little I dinked around with it (just toyed with the early Learing stuff) I really enjoyed, and eveything seemed great! So, having been one of the MANY victims of the whole RTC3 disaster (those who don't know about it, you're lucky!!! ) I thought I would do some net surfing to search for patches, etc, before I got in too deep. Having found the 1.2 patch (downloading right now, with my slow dial up) I stumbled onto this forum, and am just now reading these horror stories reagarding the NVIDIA Cards and COTN. Since I didn't play the game very long before finding this site, I can't say for certain that I will/won't be experiancing these same problems, and have to admit that I'm a wee bit paranoid now.....
So what's the verdict? Has the 1.2 patch caused anyone any problems with their NVIDIA cards, or am I just being way to cautious???
The annoying thing is I only got my snazy NIVIDIA GE Force 5500 because of the whole RTC3 fiasco. It seemed like a good idea at the time....

The problem with the Nvidia cards were their drivers. They weren't very good after version 61.77. The latest version that came out last month seems to work well with the newer Nvidia cards, but for the older cards, like yours, 61.77 is probably the driver version you may want to try if you have problems with the current version you have installed.
The 1.2 patch for CotN won't make any difference as far as the video card problems are concerned.

This may be a really lame question, but what constitutes a Grapic Card problem, rather than just a "game quirk"?
I now have the 1.2 patch installed- haven't even completed the Learning stages yet- and the only "wierd" things I notice are a few "skating" people, and an occasional "stuck" figure trying to walk in place for a little bit (this corrects itself after a lil bit though) but no freezes, crashes etc.
If this is just an unexplained quirk then that's fine. If it's a Grapic Card specific problem though......
(As far as I'm concerned, the grapics look GREAT! You guys did an awesome job! )

I think that stuck people have nothing to do with graphic card and drivrs, it is a problem with the game which usually solves itself with patch 1.2
The graphic problem is the blurring and quirk graphics when you move the mouse.
I have had no problems with my NVIDIA FX 5200 with latest drivers, while I could not play with the infamous 66.93
Keith
06-05-2005, 01:51 PM
Yes, vic is right, neither problem is related to the video card. One is a game glitch and the other is the way the devs chose to rectify certain pathing problems that occur in the game when a character's path gets blocked.

Thankyou for the feedback!
Quirks don't bother me, I'm just glad to know they aren't "forcasters" of an impending meltdown....
Just for the record, I posted the wrong "specs" for my Video Card. It's actually a NIVIDIDA GeForce FX 5700LE (the 5500 was on my old computer) but I honestly couldn't tell you what driver it's got! (I'm computer stupid in some respects! ) I do know that I've never updated whatever came with the card, and that must NOT be the dreaded 66.93 since it seems to be purring along just fine.
Thanx again,
-ZW
Sounds like the game is working fine for you now Zirconia Wolf. :D I have the same video card and have no trouble with this game or the dreaded RTC3 with the 66.93 drivers. With RTC3 my problems were caused by outdated sound drivers, and possible overheating....but it's all good now :) Their tech section is very helpful too, if you ever go back to that game.

Had a little bit of a "hiccup" last night (after...er....a "few" hours of playing) resulting in a minor freeze up. (Also a dead Noble, and no message about his passing. This happened shortly before the freeze.)
Ran the "dxdiag" thingy (thankx to Keith for the "how to" on that, btw) and my driver is listed as 6.140010.6121
Any more feedback on the rumours of the 71.84 driver causing overheating? (I'm preety sure this wasn't a Grapics Card problem, but with computers you never really know!) Just thought I would ask before I install a new driver....
-ZW
P.S. Anya, you have RCT3 too, eh? My new card (and a bunch of RAM) took care of the grapics problems but I got tired of dealing with the massive bugs (from what I read on the threads, the "patch" wasn't much of one) so I have currently uninstalled RCT3, and just play trusty RCT2 if I need a Roller Coaster fix. What really ticked me off was the way "The-Company" that designed it (don't want to get bounced for flaming another design company by name) was so totally open with the fact that they did no actual Beta testing of RCT3. (Which we were told AFTER the game was released, of coarse.)
***sigh***
COTN is much, much nicer! No game-crashing bugs as a routine, anyway....

Actually, 71.84 is an older driver now and is in the Nvidia archive (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) for XP/Win2K systems. The current version for XP/Win2K is 71.89 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html).

I note that people with 5200 cards have no problems, this is true with my kids computers. I have a 6200 card and have the smearing problem. Only trouble is this card has its own set of drivers and does not support 61.77 drivers or any other nvdia drivers for that matter. It seems strange that a card with 256mb memory can not handle this game but plays all others without a hitch including Sims 2 (surely a more complex graphics environment). Seems more like a design fault to me. Please work on it and give us a patch.

Pretty sure that there are older drivers available for your video card even if the 61.77 don't work with your card. You need to find drivers dated prior to January 2005 the farther back you can go toward the 61.77 the better the chances of the driver working. You need to update your sound card drivers if possible since they are really old.
As to TM giving a patch for a problem that is Nvidia's is highly unlikely video card companies make changes to their drivers dropping things that work with older cards. People are able to play CotN with Nvidia 6800 cards which are newer than your card but they do have to use drivers older than the referance drivers.

I have not heard any further reports of overheating with the latest driver. The problem seemed to be with th 63.96 or 71.84 driver specifically, I can't remember which.
I too was having lockup problems with my system, turns out after two years, that the problem was bad memory strips. I recenly had them replaced and my computer hasn't locked up on me once since then.
So that is one thing to keep in mind when you considering the source of your problem.

Thanks for that, didn't help much but after much searching I found on guru3d.com the latest (beta) drivers 77.13 which work with the 6200. It seems there are very few drivers out there for this card. Anyhow the 77.13 drivers work a treat on the game so here's hoping it continues.

Hi all, first timer.
Recently I installed Battlefield 2 multiplayer demo and it came with new drivers and I decided to give them a try as i already have copies of the old drivers. I tried the 77.03 drivers and they work fine but I'll keep checking for other issues.
Also do not install versions 66.93 and 71.89 as I got multiple issues and slowdows using them on ANY GAME, even booting gets slow. I found the 71.84 better, but I had the smeared video issue.

First of all, you need to attach your DxDiag file, so we can see some more important details of your system.
One question 'though.... Geforce 6200 Turbocache, isn't that a grahpics chip of a laptop? If you use a laptop, then you can't install the normal drivers on Nvidia's site. You have to see if your laptop manufacturer has more recent drivers for download.
And if it's really the graphics chip I have in mind, then I don't think you'll get the game running with it.
Anyway... we need more information to be sure and help you.

Not a laptop? Very good.
In order to attach the dxdiag file do the following steps, please:
Click START then RUN and type DXDIAG and click OK. Once the program is fully loaded, SAVE the results to a folder on your computer.
Then upload that file via the MANAGE ATTACHMENTS button below the text box area where you type your message. UPLOAD the DXDIAG.TXT file. Close the window, then SUBMIT your message.

Some of the newer Nvidia cards may not work with the 61.77 driver set. So you may have to use the newer drivers for that specific card.

@Miut,
ze Detonator driver 77.30 is an "unofficial" Nvidia-driver.
It does not appear in the nvidia-list.
Wherefrom did you get that?
I only ever go to Nvidia itself or the Guru 3d site for drivers. I needed em for a game I play. And... it is a Windows Beta release version.

But first of all, just to be sure...@zerto: can you confirm whether your HP Pavilion 061 is a desktop-pc or notebook-pc?
In case of notebok, you have to look for other drivers fitting notebook-graphic-chip!

Plenty of CPU (prozessor) and plenty of Ram, page file also perfect!

You are using a tremendous graphic equipment with Display Memory: 256.0 MB (therefore it looks like a desktop-pc to me)
You are running:
Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (75Hz) with Monitor: HP vs17 flat panel monitor
At first try do change resolution from 32bit to 16bit and 75Hz to 60Hz (flat screens "should" always go on 60Hz)

I am beginning to think that you might not install graphic-drivers from the official Nvidia-page.
The reason could be your pc:System Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061 System Model: ED723AA-B14 W5160.BE
If Hewlett Packard installed an "OEM"-hardware-card in there you will have to go for drivers to HP itself and find out if there is some new for you.
OEM=Original Equipment Manufacturer
......cos, normally when you install a driver on top of another(without deleting the old one before or not using a driver-cleaner) it should show up the new version in dxdiag!

I'm guessing that actually a Geforce FX 5500.
The review (http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/124/13/) of this card suggests that you should keep your card set of 1024x768 and under and that you not enable the anti-aliasing features due to the lack of processing power.
"Gaming wise, what you can expect from the card is that you'll be able to play most older games perfectly fine. Even quite a few of the newer games will have no big problems with this card under two conditions. The first; you need to stay at 1024x768 maximum and secondly you do not enable Antialiasing features as the card simply does not have enough processing power. It's not at all bad though. Heavy upcoming games you say? Forget about it, this card is not suitable for it."
Try disabling any of those Anti-aliasing features you may have turned on for your graphics card.
If that doesn't work, try a lower screen resoultion and refresh rate. 800x600 at 60Hz.
Before you installed the July 2004 drivers did you uninstall your previous drivers? If not you should uninstall the drivers you have and then reinstall the July 2004 drivers.

Make sure that you always uninstall the current video driver before installing another one whether you are changing to a older or newer driver version.
I assume all those hard drives are just partitions on one physical drive. Several of them don't have a great deal of free space available including your C: drive. Is your game installed on one of these low freespace drives?
Are you using any hard drive compression in your partitions? You may experience problems with applications on compressed drives.
The audio drivers on your system are virtual antiques. They could use an updating if you can find one.

That's a good idea. :) Look also for tech sites where such cards are tested and compared to get an idea of what they're capable of or what their downsides(?) are.

No, you need an AGP card. I am not sure if there is a 7900 for AGP slot available.
PCI is not the same as PCI-Express. You don't have a PCI-Express slot in your computer. Sorry. :o

i`ve tried another older game by ascaron and there it`s the same, black screen with cursor...
i got a geforce fx 5200 i`ve been trying the recomended drivers from 61.77 to 71.89 also the newest 91.31...

Strange as this might sound but it could be your sound driver that is causing the black screen. When Lords of the Realm III was released back in 2004, there were similar reports on the boards over at Sierra.
Your sound drivers are dated 2001 and are desperately in need of updating anyway.
Visit the www.soundblaster.com (http://www.soundblaster.com) site at Creative Labs and download the most recent audio drivers you can find for your Sound Blaster PCI card. Follow their directions on how to properly install the driver.
Make sure that your C-Media Wave Device onboard sound system is disabled.
You can try the following:
Go into Control Panel, System, Device Manager.
Go to "Modems" and DISABLE your modem if you have one.
If you have a second sound card in your system, go to "Sound Devices", and DISABLE any additional sound devices you may have other than your main soundcard.
Now close the device manager.
Go to Control Panel, Sound, and click the "Audio" Tab. You should now have your main soundcard, and ONLY that one, in the selection boxes. Click the "Only use preferred sound device"-Checkbox at the bottom ("Nur Standardgeraete verwenden" in german versions of Windows)
Press OK.
Now run the game and set your sound mixer in the game's options to software again.

first thanks to Keith for the quick reply :)
i`ve disabled the second audio device and updated the SB driver, badly there is only a version of 10/02 ...
i cecked the all you said, the SB is the only sound device left also the "preffered thing" is checked.
went trying with nvidia drivers.. from 61.77 to 91.31
still the game gives me the black screen :(
so i tried disabling the sound blaster activating the onboard sound device but wasn`t any good either...
even tried to disable all sound devices but well also no luck on that :o
so maybe you have some more ideas?! PLEASE!!!!!!!:)

Try this:
1. Open the C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\Data\Movies folder on your hard drive.
2. Delete the two .bik movie files.
3. Start the game, and as soon as the game starts to load open the drive door that has your CotN CD in it.
The problem is apparently being caused by your system's attempt to load the opening movie files. By deleting them from the game folder and opening the drive just as the game starts to load (But before it gets to the black screen problem area) you bypass the loading of those movie files.
See if that gets you to the main menu.
If not you may want to uninstall the game. Do a hard drive cleanup and defragmentation. Then reinstall the game.
mouse
07-06-2006, 05:55 PM
At least part of your problem is the lack of free space on your C drive. It would be a good idea to run disk cleanup, uninstall some programs or move files to cd/dvd to make room on your C drive and defrag, even if the game isn't installed on C windows still needs room for the page file and for windows to move things aound.

back again...
still nothing worked out :(
did a harddrive cleanup and defrag, even tried to install the game on my 2nd hd wich is almost emty.
the deleting of the intro movies didn`t work either, still the black screen with its cursor. but the movies loaded all fine. it`s just the normal intro just the black screen when it comes to the game menu.
also i disabled the onboard sound an an onboard modem (just found that) in the bios.
i`ve checked back again at the Geforce page, there is someting about
problems with amd an agp fast write, wich should be disabled?! but i checked my bios canīt find agp fast write in there...
guess if there is no other option i`ll have to reinstall windows and somehow give my pc a complete cleanup *sigh*

Do you have a control panel program for your Nvidia? My ATI card has a control panel program that has those sorts of controls on it. I can disable and enble things right from there instead of the BIOS.
Did you open the drive door as soon as the game started to load?
Just deleting the movies on the HD will make it seek the files on the CD. Opening the drive door prevents them from being found on the CD. The CD is only required for the SecuROM security check when you click on the Play button on the autorun menu or the COTN icon on your desktop. Once the CD has been verified you can open the door as soon as it starts to load the game files.

Actually, for the 6600 and the 6200, AGP versions, the 84.21 drivers are far more stable than any of the 9x.xx series. The issue appears to be in the coding for video playback support, however, so it may not effect gameplay for CotN (except the opening video sequence...). Symptoms range from extreme slowdown, lack of responsiveness, all the way to total system lockup when trying to play any form of video file (including the .bik files that CotN uses). If you are having any of these problems and own a 6xxx series card prior to the 6800, using the 9x.xx series of drivers, try replacing them (complete uninstall of old drivers, and install of new) with the 84.21 drivers.
Another way to test and see if this is your issue is to load a video file (any MPG file or AVI file will do) in Windows Media Player. If you experience lockups or slowdowns of the system, go to your Display Properties panel, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshoot, and turn Hardware Acceleration all the way down to None. Then try playing the video file again...if it now plays smoothly, this is most likely your problem, and the 84.21 drivers should solve it.
EDIT: The Driver date for the 84.21 drivers should be 03/09/2006, and may or may not report as being WHQL logo certified for your card, depending on exactly which version card you have.

Hmm...never seen any overheating issues, and I'm running an overclocked 6200 AGP on my second computer...although it's also got very good case cooling as well as living in an air conditioned room - so you may be right for people a bit less paranoid about proper cooling than I am :P. I do know that the 91.31 and the 91.47 drivers both have issues with playing any sort of video files on that machine however, and did so right out of the box (before any overclocking). In fact, the splash video screen for the install CD shipped with the card won't even play after you install the provided drivers... Again, haven't tested it with Caesar IV yet on that machine, but the 84.21 drivers did solve the video playback issue. This seems to be a common problem for many people with the 6200, and the newer release drivers, as well as for at least a few people with the 6600. And again, this only seems to apply to the AGP versions of these cards, the PCI-E versions work fine with the 91.31 drivers.

Oh definitely, if the newer drivers work, by all means use them. I'm currently using the 91.47 drivers on my main machine, and they work like a charm. It was just suggested as a fix for those people that are having the above mentioned video playback issue with those two particular cards ;).

I have a 7600GS512 PCI-E and the 91.31 drivers screwed up my USB-TV so I rolled back to the 84.21 and everything is good again.

But i had an old pc with a Riva TNT2 graphic card that turns of the monitor everytime i tryied to run it.

I guess is not only the mill that it's tilted after all.
Years have passed from the release of this games and still several people have the same problem that i have.
That only leads to one conclusion:
Bad programming on this game.
No wonder why it doesn't have an official web site anymore.
They screw up things in development and just let thinks go, like the game doens't exist anymore.
I have tryied anything to make this game work and one thing is left to me.

Game runs fine here. I had a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and beta tested CotN with it; that card was recently replaced by Dell with a nVidia 7600 GS. No problem with either card.
Look to your system for the root cause of your problem. You have something running or lack something that is needed and that is causing your problem.
You didn't post your dxdiag.txt file.
What video driver version are you using? Have you done a full system virus spyware scan? Done a hard drive cleanup and defrag? Done a registry clean?
It might be worth uninstalling the game before you did the above, then reinstall from the Windows Safe Mode afterwards.
Have you tried disabling your virus scanner to see if that might be causing the problem? What other processes or background apps might be running on your system that could be conflicting with the game?

What do you mean by power supply/wattage? As for $, <500.
Keith
07-02-2007, 10:02 AM
The piece of hardware in your computer that converts the 120VAC or 220VAC (depending on where you live) current from your wall to something the motherboard and the rest of the hardware can safely use is the Power Supply Unit (PSU). These are rated in how much power can be safely drawn from them in Watts. Each piece of hardware draws a certain amount of wattage from the PSU. As long as the total wattage doesn't exceed the capacity of the PSU things are okay.
In older computers, manufacturers used smaller capacity PSU units because hardware demands were relatively small. However, since that time many newer pieces of hardware, like video cards, are demanding more power from the PSU than they used to do because they are doing more than they used to do.
Many newer video cards require power supply units that have a higher wattage rating than the old computers are equipped with. That is why when you upgrade an old system with a new video card you have to make sure that the new card will work with the wattage supplied by the current PSU otherwise you will have to update the PSU with one that provides a larger capacity (more wattage) to get the new video card to behave properly.

Uninstall the old driver then restart the computer. After restarting double click the new driver you just downloaded and let it do it's thing automatically. If it gives you the "found new hardware bit" first, ignore it, then open up the new driver you just downloaded and let it install itself.

Are you having a problem with 162.18?
Nothing wrong with staying with 162.18, which is what I have currently installed. You probably aren't going to see any big change in performance between 162.18 and 163.71 unless you have one of the games that are mentioned in the release notes for which they tweaked the newer driver.

Thank you, Phil. Since I run Vista 32 bit, I will certainly report on the preformance on this driver for older games. The SLI update is for AoC, as I understand, but I doubt anything under the Nividia 8800 will run that game smoothly. I will test it for CotN, and let you know.
Just got a PC rebuild with the following specs.
AMD Athalon 2x Dual core processor BE-2400, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs)
2 gig ram
Nvidia 8600 GT integrated RAMDAC 512 mb
Audigy 2 SB sound card as before.
Win XP Pro SP 2 updated - but no SP3 update as I have been told it is buggy and has Vista stuff in it I don't need by a guru who has done all the M$ courses and is in charge of bank network n pcs...
Am running it with the Quatro drivers - 175.51 and reinstalled C0tN and the game causes a BSOD with a Dump.. saying check I have enough space :( Am also defragging C drive - HD is about 600 gig in 4 partitions and the game is on my E game drive which has 264 gig free, and C drive has 39.5 gig free.
I assume space on either isn't a problem?
I also assume I need to go back to the 175.16 drivers?
Sound drivers are latest too, did the Creative Labs SB free scan to update em.
Page file set to 2046 mb initial and 4092 mb max... I assume this is enough? Seems plenty to me...
Thanks for any help
Not a happy city builder especially as new scenarios out. :(
I have had problems viewing any video file at all including DVDs for a while since the rebuild, (everything was tones of green) so I decided to reinstall XP. Um... 30 mins later I had to reformat drive C then reinstall a fresh XP.
Sire enough, I have no problems now with CotN or the videos & dvds. :)
Thanks for the help.
Sure, why not? I do warn you, though, I use a CRT monitor that must now be 7-8 years old because it is LARGE and it lets me use 1600x1200 rez which the flat screens won't. I use a flat screen at work and the lowest rezz is way too big. :( I hate it, so I'll stick with the CRT till the rez comes down and so does the price for flats. :)
This means I can only have the screen at 60 Hz or 70 Hz Refresh and with some drivers there is too much flicker for my eyes - flicker others might not notice, but I have always needed good vid cards to let me set the environment colors to soft ones my eyes can stand without giving me migraines.
Dunno how I got the .dl corruption, it was a fresh install on a new machine with very little in the way of programs on it yet. :(
At least it is now solved and the game looks even more stunning with jewel bright colors. :) Thanks again for the help.
Heh, maybe you can give me advice on my UPS then. I don';t use software as it bleats only has 15 mins power when it is larger than that. I have only PC in the battery n surge side, and my external drive which is nearly always off, n only on for short periods as a back up source. Other surge sockets used yes for monitor etc.
With that I shouldn't get any spikes or browns, should I?
