well, since there's going to be ****** before we get the game in Slovenia/Europe I d.loaded&installed demo, hoping to try out a bit of the game at least...

Well, no can do!!!! whenever I try to start the demo it resets my computer :( :( . Beat's me why. I don't poses the ultimate beast in computing, my cofie grinder has fiew years on it's back, but it should be able to run the game. These are the specs:

mobo: MSI K7Turbo(MS-6330)
cpu: AMD Athlon T-bird 900MHz
ram: 384 MB
graphic: ATi Radeon 9600 with 128MB of memory
Windows XP home edition and DirectX 9.0c

Is there somebody with same simptomes, but with solution on his hands :D . And don't tel me flash your bios, install the latest drivers... i'm bit lazy for that kind of solutions. Game should be able to run as it is. I don't mind the speed (I played Pharaoh on P120 :p :D :D ).

Hm, you definitely should make sure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Not doing so might render your system less usable, even wrt to games which seem to work already.

For ATi Radeon 9600 you should probably use the Catalyst 4.8 - I have a 9600 XT and 4.8 works fine. Newer drivers make some problems with other (older) games, but 4.8 is fine.

Are you also lazy when it comes to applying security updates or anti wirus updates to your computer? Not a good idea, if you ask me.

no, I have my firewall, antivirus, antispyware and popup stopper set on automatic update mode, so I had no probs with this till now...

....but, i went to update my graphic drivers so first I had to install XPSP2 and my firewall imediatly fought with that useles Windows firewall, got some stupid aditional IE bar with popup notifications and Catalyst 4.8 drivers that replaced my ATI startup icone with something that does not work.... well... O.K. that something does something... it produces this:

CLI.exe Aplication Error

have no time to deal with it now, cause I have to work like 14 hrs tomorow and I have to catch some sleep. if someone have are any more bright sugestiones I'd realy welcome them :D , regading game and current driver problem :p .... and where can i find that DX diagnostic? havent realy look for that... ever. :o

okay... gave up with those new catalyst 4.8 or 4.11 drivers that persistantly produced CLI.exe error mesages and caused closing and opening of programe windows in see trough slow mortion, so I reinstaled those that came with my card. there's no more error mesages :) , but game is stil reseting my comp :( .

so.... here's my DXdiag if someone could decyfer what apart of pld proc and bit dated drivers might be wrong:

was your version of XP an upgrade version as i noticed that both HDD are set to Fat 32 not NTFS if it was an upgrade that could be your problem as for the driver issue if you are willing to try another set try version 4.2 they have been the most stable set of the year with 9600 cards

no... I had win98 on it before, but I formated HD before instaling XP. beates me why I didn't change file allocation sistem to NTFS. might be something with cluster sizes or partitioning....

I'll try 4.2 drivers as well. who knows, it might help :) .

oh, yeah... what drivers have I now? is there any logic in those numbers so one can read out the popular catalyst x.x number?

Driver Name: ati2dvag.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6368

and thnx NeilV.

Driver Name: ati2dvag.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6368 (English)
DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
Driver Date/Size: 6/25/2003 10:40:44, 302592 bytes

Taken by the driver date you have cat ver 3.6 / 3.7

as the way to work out cat no. is year and month as ATI do an update each month

Not sure if their is a way to work it out from driver version as mine show up as
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6490 (English)
DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
Driver Date/Size: 10/26/2004 20:35:58, 214528 bytes

But on the options tab of the control panel they show up as 4.11

Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6476 (English)
DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
Driver Date/Size: 8/25/2004 13:29:04, 209408 bytes

Have you tried Catalyst 4.8 yet? That version (as already told long ago in this thread) works fine for me, newer versions don't.

:) , yep... did that right after reading your post... didn't went well. check fourth post in thread ;) . thanks anyway, tobing.

but, what are the esentials in dxdiag? how do you see what is wrong? I underestand that direct X version, graphic procesor&driver and main procesor are esential, mybe some thing with memory... but esentialy game should be able to run. regardles of it speed.

Sorry, seems I didn't notice that. So this says you were not able to install and use 4.8? Have you used 4.9 oder newer before installing 4.8? If that would be the case, you have to uninstall any newer driver and maybe use a removal tool (found on the ATI site iirc) before you can install an older driver. There might be some mix between versions you have installed now on your system, which could cause a lot of trouble.

Another approach might be to use the so called Omega drivers - some people reported that everything would work much better (and faster) with those than with the original STI drivers. Might be worth to try that...

hell.... I tried out almost all ATI catalist drivers. vesiones from 3.8 to 4.3 kind of work, but causes picture on monitor to shake shortly and quickly in intervals of aprox. half of minute. versiones higher than that produce CLI&co errors. beates me.... not that I cant play demo... I kind of cant understand why I'm not able to update that stupid drivers

I'm back on my original version of 3.6 that came on CD with graphic card. they work like charm, but I cant play CoTN

Just some quick notes for ATI cards that you must un-install (1) previous display driver, ati control panel first. Reboot next (2). And install (3) the latest drivers last. In step (3), you must install ATI Display Driver first, then ATI Control Panel.

The latest Catalyst for ATI Radeon card as I see on its site is 4.11.

Do you have FastWrite disabled? We've seen that in some cases disabling fastwrite can help with ATI cards. Let us know if that helps.

yes Jacqou Le.... after doing it for about 10 times, belive me that I know that :p . that is one big reason that I gave up. you realy get tyred of it :D .

and I'm on a virge of giving up on this game too :( . I'm a fan of whole series from CaesarIII onwards. a huge one! bought them all, even when pirate copy was in reach of my hand for free. but now I have a slight feeling of unfinished product here... I mean, my comp is far from it's youth, it's kind of metusalem... but I was able to instal and run Doom 3 demo for exsample. with no problems. it worked, with like five frames per second :D :D :D , but it worked! it wasn't bothered by aincent drivers, ****y procesor, old direct X, low end graphic.... and we are talking of computer&graphic power hungry game in last decade. geezz.... it's just a stupid building game. please make it work.... I don't mind the speed, I just wish to play it... :(

Ill go and try it with fastwrite disabled now. hope that it'll help :) . thanks.

so, my dear friends..... I'm hapy to anounce the end of my problems. my demo is finaly working :D .

it happens that this game is guite hapy with low end Ati's graphic cards, it's aincent Catalyst 3.6 drivers, slugish CPUs, FastWrites on or of... etc...
all of this simply doesn't matter. what caused my demo game to crash was downloaded falulty demo package ;) . I tok it of one of GameSpot or 3D Gamers mirrors. not shoure wich one, cause I downloaded it a week ago.

I found that out right after checking fastwrite off that resulted in just another crash. it pissed me off, so I uninstaled the demo, then felt sorry and downloaded it aggain, but since d.load rate at GameSpot was meezely 30k i went lower on the list of d.load locations and PC Game World did the honnores fast&neetly. the instalation guide was bit different than first time. it produced fiew more option choices than the other one. "instal direct X or not " was one of them. I realy don't remember much more and fankly, I dont realy care, it's late, I'm beaten and the thing finaly works.... well it started and I took quick see arround the first map, zoomed in and out of map, rotated it and did some menue clicking. enough for now and enough to make me hapy :D :D .
