How do you become a member of a group membership?

In my profile there is is a spot for group memberships does anyone know how I can join any? or is that for something completly not to do with COTN?

Nope. It's just a feature of the forum software, and is not really utilized currently.

Would there be any reason to use groups? Maybe if there are shared interests beyond CB games and CotN?
