ok, done a full reinstall, updated to the enchanced edition, that didn't fix the problem, basically every time i try to start COTN (just after i would have tryed to launch the COTN .exe) it simply gives me a "children of the nile has enountered a problem and needs to close" now i haven't really changed anything, or done anything major since i last played the game fine, no hardware changes or anything, so does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?
and my Dxdiag is attatched
edit : ok, it's seemingly a problem with the Enchanced Edition patch, because the unpatched version works fine
Hi, what drive are you using, hopefully not your C: drive?

No, my D: drive, and i've narrowed it down to being a problem with the patch, since unpatched works fine
edit D:\games files\Sega\Immortal cities to be precise

There are 3 things you need to do for the patched version to work:
1. you need more free space on C drive for 2 reasons:a. windows need more space than what you cureently have available b. the enhanced version of the game adds files to C drive no matter where the game is installed
2. you need to install a newer version of DX 9 which the game requires to run when it's patched
3. you need to update your video drivers to some time in 2008.

Nope, none of it worked, game still refuses to launch, i guess i'll re download the patch in abit and try it again
edit : nope, still won't work, but i do notice the updater says it can patch my verion of COTN even though i just ran the updater, so i presume maybe it's somthing to do with the updater?

As mouse mentioned, the update now puts user files on your C drive (specifically in the "Documents" or "My Documents" folder). Even if you install on D: you still need enough space on C: for user files and for the Windows swap file, unless you've moved both of those.
I'm not sure why you are still having a problem. Could you post an updated dxdiag?

Sure, here you go, i've just cleared some more space off my C Drive (mainly just cleared out the recycle bin and according to my computer, i now have 2.41 gbs on the C drive), i'm not sure why i'm having this problem either, i've had no problems with the Enchanced edition before now, just when i tryed starting COTN a few days ago, it wouldn't run, i will check my firewall and make sure i haven't been stupid and stopped a COTN file running or somthing, anyway, dxdiag attached

Make sure you have the directX version novemb 08! Looks you`re not having the latest.
Why not make mor room on C by deleting at least some 25 old restore points.
You also get a lot of free space by deleting the uninstall-exe`s from win-updates. CCleaner can do that.

ah,i doubted june08 could be the latest, i just got the one directed from the COTN homepage, i'll give CCleaner a good run now
edit : i seem unable to find the Nov08 directx on the windows download page, the latest seem to be marked june08
edit 2: so the update is supposed to install files in my documents & c:\programfiles\sega\imoortal cities? because after running the installer, i don't have either of those directories

ok, thats updated, still doesn't work, but for the one time i tryed it unpatched (it was unpatched when i just updated the directx) that doesn't work either now, nor does the patched version
edit : my apologies, must have been a one time thing, the unpatched version works again

i don't mean to sound impatient or anything, but i don't suppose anyone has an idea what could be causing this? my direct x is up to date, as are my graphics drivers, i have 3.11gbs of space on the C drive, i'm at a loss here as to what could be causing this, considering it has worked fine with the Enchanced Edition previously

You need more free space on C drive the amount you have free now is less than your page files has set aside. Windows needs a minimum of 20% free drive space to move files around even with the game installed on a different drive. Also you need to shut down background programs to free up more resouces to run this game which is very demanding on a system.

i have 6gbs free on the c drive now, with a pagefile of 3gbs, i really don't think i can take much more off now, not that it worked, i'm going to try the sound drivers later once the realtek website decides to get it's act together and stop giving me a download speed of 6kb a second :(

Realtek won`t get it`s act together any better.............the speed with them is normal (a snail moves faster!)
people who update sounddrivers more often than you do
do know about that fact.

I've just updated directx, defragged, patched, scanned, and restarted, but the game still won't start up; same message as above. Can anyone please help? Here's my DXdiag:

Singe your video drivers need to be updated to mid 2008 version at the minimum.

The computer was new three months ago, so I wouldn't have thought so. I'll have a go anyway, though...
(edit)
All drivers updated. No difference :(

New computers don't come with new drivers please post a new DX diag so I can see that the drivers took effect. Also did you download and install the lastest version of DX 9 (it's not available on windows update). Another thing that can block a game from loading is background programs like virus scanners or always on spyware scanners. Those can usually be turned off by right click on the icon in the task bar. Also if your using steam and a firewall you might need to give steam permission on your firewall.

Vista is an if/maybe for this cd version of the game the only thing left did you download and install DX 9 the latest version even though you have DX 10 there are files needed that only come with DX 9c.

your last dxdiag shows nvidia driver version 175.45
latest version for your vista 32bit is nvidia 180.48 have a try with that.
your sounddriver for Creative SB X-Fi dates from 9/24/2007
do find out which soundcard type you have cos there are "extreme, music, games" a.s.o.
it has to be exact to get the right one and I`ll link it for you
