On behalf of the entire Children of the Nile team, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our fans, friends, and to the generally curious. Here we intend to build and support a thriving and mutually supportive community, and for that, of course we need you! We hope you will visit these forums often, and enjoy mingling with members of the development team and user community.

Our fans are one of our biggest strengths, and we look forward to hearing your suggestions and thoughts about city-building, and Children of the Nile specifically. For those of you who have kept touch with us and are returning, welcome back, we hope to create the same type of positive, non-flaming yet free open atmosphere you all enjoyed before.

Our sincerest appreciation for all your support,

-Chris Beatrice & Jeremiah ‘Reed’ Freyholtz

This is the best company I've ever come across! You keep true to your fan base. :D

"For those of you who have kept touch with us and are returning, welcome back, we hope to create the same type of positive, non-flaming yet free open atmosphere you all enjoyed before."

That is amazing that you should even mentioned fans from your earlier projects. And we want nothing else then a forum like the one before. :D

I'm so glad that you all are developing a new game. When I heard about the demise of Impressions (or whatever it was that demised) I was so sad, worried that I would never find another good city building game. I'm really looking forward to the release of this game! And please make it a series!

Hello everyone,

It is good to see that the old gang on Impression Games have gotten back and from the looks of it have brought the city building games to a new height.

Good luck guys.

PS: I have been with the fans of city-building games since Caesar III, many you might know me as Yuan Chang on Sierra.

I just found out about this game a couple of days ago, so I'm not a CB vet or anything, but I'm really excited about this game. :D I like strategy games a lot, but I tend to focus on improving my village/city/country more than I focus on my military, and a lot of strategy games are centered around war. So I'm glad to see something like CotN coming out.

Fansites are just that, fansites. They are an end in themselves and done for the fun or love of it. If you expect anything for having set one up, you'll probably most likely be disappointed.

At this time there is nothing you can learn from a fansite that isn't posted here first. Once the game gets released there'll be more interest in a good fansite with player hints and tips to read and custom maps, etc. to download.

An intelligent response isn't alot to ask bub.

The cold shoulder wasn't deserved so that's why I posted what I did.

Whatever you may think of it, one who invests an effort or not is still worthy of a reply. That is not too much to ask.

Maybe I am just old fashioned or just old; but being put on ignore is rude in my book.

I thought both my replies were quite intelligent and to the point. You came across as a bit needy in your post in the other thread.

Cold shoulder? No one is being rude to you. I'm no spring chicken either, but when you create a website that's the risk you take. If people like what your website may have, they'll come back.

I have websites myself. Some are more popular than others. I spend hours on at least one of them every week keeping it updated. That's the way things are for whatever reasons there may be.

As I mentioned in the poste above, there isn't much you can have on the game that isn't posted here or one of the e-magazine sites first. That doesn't mean that you couldn't have more to offer like historical information, etc. that might be interesting. Fansites don't truly come into their own until the game is released and people are playing the game.

I come here because this where I can see or learn about whatever it may be about the game first from first hand sources and because this is where most of the people are for whatever the reason.

JDF
07-31-2004, 04:14 AM
Apparently you missed the thread I answered most of this in.

My first post in this thread WAS ignored by everyone who came after.

Look it up, it's on the record.

Glory for fansites isn't why I said anything here or why I created a new thread.

When we have come here since May, when most of us created new accounts... my own date of membership is within days of yours and been shot down in our posts instead of being greeted, we begin to understand that there may be more to it than what meets the eye. Like I said, see the other thread and you'll see why I am referring to 'we'.

If this closed group are the only purchasers of the game, we are all in trouble.

You guys need to open up a little and expand your horizons.

Keith
07-31-2004, 04:30 AM
Nah, this isn't a closed group. Just that most people don't have much to say at times.

I'm not much of a joiner when it comes to webrings. I thought it better to leave the thread to those that were interested in joining than posting a "no thanks." The thread quickly drifted to ads for various websites, to which, I admit, I did add a few posts to myself. ;)

Sometimes you just have to post away and let people get to know you before they are willing to join you in some idea that you have.

I know I should stay out of this, but I joined here when I learned where the Impression Games guys had gone. When I made my first post here, I didn't know anyone, and I don't see myself as part of a "closed group". I see "us" as those players who care enough about an unfinished, not yet widely known game; those who are excited enough to put time into the development of a community that is just awakening. Pioneeers, of sorts. That doen't mean we are somehow "elitist", it only means we are enthusiastic about the game, the genre, or the studio. CotN isn't yet a game like Doom 3 or Half Life that people talk abut years before its release. Still, I've experienced the regulars here as very welcoming and open, which is the reason I've stayed. :)

JDF
07-31-2004, 10:35 PM
You make a good point.

Not everyone has had the same experience as me.

I was talking about myself and several people I know online.

I should also be careful about painting all users of Tilted Mill with the same brush.

I was miffed and should have been more careful about my wording.

I've got a question for the producers. If any ideas from this forum will be used in the game, will the forum be mentioned in the game's Credits? As you know, of course, brainstorming isn't exactly easy and some acknowledgement and thanks to the neurons that have passed away for the wellfare of the game would be nice. :)

Probably not. This question usually shows up on the pre-release boards at some point.

More than likely the only non-team member names you may see in the credits are those that participate in the beta test.

Yes. I was particularly pleased on my personal (but minor) impact on Emperor and another game once due to a suggestion and a source I found. On more 'public' forums like this, you can even discuss things with the developers themselves. This is perhaps the best part of being here, with the second probably being the rebuilding of the old impressions community.

Make the most of your time here, because when this forum gets larger and less personal, you are going to miss it.

Also, brainstorming is pretty damn easy, its implementing and executing those ideas thats the tricky bit. :p

Traxia
08-02-2004, 12:11 PM
Brainstorming isn't easy. Especially when you have to come up with new ideas on old subjects. Often brainstorms have many different levels and many different days. I know that I've looked at the products of a brainstorm and thought 'maybe we had too much caffeine on that day' or 'when did that ever seem like a good idea'.

Sometimes implementing is easier than brainstorming because it's stuff you've done before but with different parameters.

And then again sometimes brainstorming is so easy that you think you'd need a computer dedicated to this program alone just to fit all the ideas in.

Ok I'll stop waffling now...

They generally do not publicly announce who is a beta tester. The selected people are notified by email. Beta testers are usually asked not to identify themselves as part of the test.

I just wanted to say hello, I was very excited to find out a few days ago about this game! pharaoh was one of my favorite games, but everytime I played I keep wondering about how it would be if it was in 3d and with a more realistic system, and now I find out you are doing exacly that! I almost cry when I read the news.

Im a bit sad Im kind of late in this forums, even if I have a suggestion, I think it just cannot be implemented since the game is almost ready to go :( I wouldve liked to participated in the beta test too, but since I live in Colombia I doubt I could do it.

No problem with your English!! :)

Just one thing that you should possibly note: CotN is not necessarily a 3D remake of Pharaoh. :) This has been discussed in some depth in one of the other threads already. The gameplay dynamics are apparently significantly different. Therefore do not expect to necessarily see a remake of Pharaoh. CotN will be different --- we are just eagerly awaiting to see how different it will be!!

I must say there are definitely some great ideas/concepts defined in this presentation. Most obvious is the social orientation vs. the "spread sheet" profile seen in previous city building titles. I've been playing games in this genre since the first Impressions' Caesar back in '92. Sure, there will be hiccups/changes in styles and gameplay if there is development in this genre (i.e., witness the changes of the Impressions' productions over the years.) I just hope that the annual "Fall Rush" of games, of which this is one, does not allow this gem to get "lost in the crowd," if you'll pardon the metaphor. There is certainly a great game here with potential for huge development. Hopefully this will be a new era for city building games...

Best of luck Tilted Mill!!

Hi sendarrow.
No, you don't see them fighting (excepte when invaders invade your city, and then it's quite limited). You just build troops and send them off (kind of Caesar III or Zeus)

Not on the world level, only when raiders attack your city.

Hi Sendarrow and welcome. Yes you can send your army to fight other cities and countries but you cannot see that. But you can watch some raiders enter your city and see them and your city guards fighting. That is not perhaps what you are looking for.(?) MarkDuffy will certainly tell you more of his experimenst with lots of raiders. :p :D

You are Pharaoh, but you don't control him. Actually you really don't "control" anyone. Just make thier lives better or worse.

Exciting??? Yeah, I think so. :D Lots of fun.

Sendarrow, the game is a citybuilder and the military aspects of the game are not the emphasized. You cannot see the fighting unless it is occurring in your city if some invader arrives. Even at that it's not going to be the type of fighting that you might see in a wargame. The focus of these games is citybuilding much like Sim City.

You cannot actually be pharaoh. However, you are pharoah in the sense that you can control certain aspects of the game like throwing festivals, taxing or not taxing nobles, etc. Your powers are somewhat limited in that regard.

I would suggest your try playing the downloadable demo of the game.

^_^

I'm glad I could join. I love forums, Egypt, RPGs, and especially, the CoTN game. I will come here as often as I can (seeing as I am an admin on four other RPG sites, one of which has to do with Egypt and is not open yet) during the summer, because the only time I can get on here during the school year is on my dad's computer, else my server account at school will be disabled...and that would get me in trouble. And my dad doesn't let me on the Internet, I have to sneak on. But I have CoTN at home to keep me occupied anyways, so that's alright.

Anyway, I'll seeya around. I have to go catch my bus ('tis 7:49 right now, have to be out at 7:50), but I'll try and come here as much as possible.

And thanks for having these forums, it's fun to chat with people who like CoTN!

Elven

P.S. Reed is with you guys too! Wow! I remember when he was the Mod at the Old Inn! Heya Reed!
I just wanted to say that I've been playing CB's for years, Pharoah, Caesar, Clio, etc. I've been to the websites for the games but have never had an experience like the forums with this game. I appreciate the help and insight from the more experienced players as well as reading gameplay problems from novices like myself. I have learned a great deal from reading the posts. This is a new experience for me and I have to say that the website is almost as adictive as the game. Thank you for getting it right. It's refreshing.

Hi, all!

I just want to say 'Thanks' for the great game. I'm in the best of both worlds: A teacher and a strategy gamer. Games like CotN support my dictum that critics of computer games are full of it. Games can still be fun and - gasp -educational.

Sadly, when people hear 'computer games' they immediately think of a gun barrel bobbing on the lower part of the screen or a busty woman executing moves Jet Li can only dream about.

I personally dislike FPS, platformers. button-mashing beat-em-ups, angst-ridden anti-hero games, and, yes, RTS. (I do not consider CotN to be on the same level as the usual concept of RTS. For one, combat is abstract, with the concentration on building and sociology. RTS is build and destroy.)
I relish the likes of Patrician, Port Royale, Railroad Tycoon.

I'd like to end with an appropriate salute, but instead I was wondering: Can one of you erudite moderators compile an ancient Egyptian vocabulary/glossary?

angelisis

I realise this is an old thread but I have only just read it. We've only just got the game here in the UK in March so you guys have a headstart on us. How about Elton John, 'Crocodile Rock' circa 1972. I'm old enough to have actually danced to it :o and I know all the words :D Maybe it could be the official music for the game ;)

 This is one of the best and most learned communitys Ive ever been a privalige to belong to! I have received and am able to access everything about COTN and more, it has made my COTN experiance that much more exciting and fun! Tilted Mill has done an excelent job at building this fan based community! Thought when I got this it would be a mono-experiance Am glad it has so many fans who are willing to communicate and still seems to be growing Worldwide! Its so exciting to have seen the great responce from all the Countrys this has been introduced too!
Sincerly,

But seriously, thanks Chris and Jerimiah. I am waiting with bated breath for my copy of CotN to arrive in the mail. I have been forced to content myself with the demo every once in a while due to time and money constraints. Looking forward to playing the full version!

Update: Finally received CotN, ( ordered from Canadian, sent from USA, received "PC Gamer" UK edition - the wonders of the global economy! ) loving it so far, though I find myself missing some features other games have that would have been useful (numbered report hotkeys, ability to prioritize or delay construction, highlighting associated workers when buildings are clicked on ). Food for thought, if TM is considering a sequel.:)
