Ok, I just downloaded the game from D2D and I have read that the patch isnt compatible with that version, thats fine, however when I start the first tutorial I got to the point where to tells you to place the four common stores, and it froze my computer. I restarted and tried it again. The second time it froze at the point where it asks to to add the two townhouses. Ive run the DxDiag I cant see an discrepancies, any suggestions?

Try setting your page file to 3000mb/3gb.

Sorry here's some other things you can try: 1. if you play without the headset since CotN had some problems with USB 2. you might try to roll your drivers back to earlier in 2008 since Ati video can be a bit flaky with the newest driver.

sigh yet again, no success. Whats wierd is that I can make it about 15-20 min before it freezes. I have no other programs running, scans are up to date, plenty of free memory, page file is at 3Gig... I really enjoy the game but I cant seem to figure out what is going on. When it freezes my CPU starts making the "thinking" noise for about 2 secs then stops then starts and that keeps repeating, like is hung up on something.

Disable all your non-Windows services loading on to your system. Something in one of those is probably having a conflict with the game.
You can disable most of these from the msconfig menu. Click Start > Run and type msconfig. Then on the Services tab, check the box along the bottom next to HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES. Then click on Disable ALL after that to disable everything left. Click APPLY and restart your computer.
Now try running the game. If you still lockup, you can undo by repeating the steps above and clicking on Enable All, then APPLY, and reboot.
If you still have a problem you can move over to the msconfig STARTUP tab and uncheck non-essential startup applications that Windows doesn't need. Click apply. Reboot.
If that fixes the problem, one of the startup apps is the problem. You can determine which one by re-checking the box of those you have unchecked one at a time. Put a check back in the box for one app. Click Apply, and reboot. It's slow and laborious but it is the only way you'll find the app that has the problem.
If you want you can make a couple of screenshots and post the JPEG images here for us to look at before you tackle this. Make screenshot of the top of the Startup list, then scroll down a bit and make another. Repeat until you have jpegs of the entire list. Use the Manage Attachments function below the typing area of the message reply on the board to add your images to your next reply.

my CPU starts making the "thinking" noise
If it's beeping from the system speaker it may be detecting a hardware problem, such as your GPU getting too hot.

no its not the beeping noise its the noise it makes when its loading something large, like when a program starts up, but it makes it for 2 secs then stops them starts again without doing anything.. Going to try and do what you suggested Keith
