I get this error message: c:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\CoTN.exe: unknown version.
I checked to see what version it is and it doesn't say what version.

Did you purchase the game on a disk or by download? Have you installed any of the patches?

I received the same error message, tiger07, when I tried to update my CotN. Did you purchase the game off of D2D? I did, and that is apparently the problem. Tilted Mill is currently talking to D2D to work around the problem (see thread (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18222)).

I tried both the US and UK editions... the US edition I got a message like the one in the first post. The UK edition seemed to install ok but when I tried running the game, it crashed. Unfortunately I didn't save the error message when it crashed, and I've since uninstalled/reinstalled the game.

I bought mine here in Australia from Dick Smith so I'm not sure which version I should be using.

You should probably be using the U.K. versions of everything. The U.S. patch should not install at all on a U.K. version of the game. The installer checks the language versions before it proceeds and if they don't match the installer stops or is supposed to stop.

Make sure you have the proper version of DX9 installed. DirectX is usually updated by Microsoft every couple of months. You need a version dated from the time of CotN's release (or the version on the game CD) or one from a later date. In this case, DX 9.0c will work in place of DX 9.0b.

Check the dates on your audio drivers. If they very old you may have to update those drivers.

Check the dates on your video drivers and update if needed.

Disable any background apps that you may have running. Try disabling your anti-virus and anti-spyware software before running the game.

If you have anything like Daemon Tools, Anti-Blaax, CloneCD, Alcohol %120, etc. disable or uninstall it/them.

If you keep having problems you can try running the SecuROM Launch Analysis utility. With the CotN disc in the drive, right click on the desktop icon or the cotn.exe file itself and select Launch Analysis. Let it finish. Locate the resulting file it creates in the C:\ root folder called AnalysisLog.sr0. Zip that file up. Create a email with Children of the Nile in the message title. Describe your problem. Attach the zipfile to the email and send it to support@securom.com. They will examine the file for conflicts with securom and get back to you.

System requirements for CotN are:

Minimum:

Pentium® III or Athlon® 800 MHz processor or higher
Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP operating system
128 MB of RAM (256 MB required for Windows® XP)
1.1 GB uncompressed free hard drive space

A 100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP-compatible computer system including:
DirectX® 9.0b
100% DirectX® 9-compliant true 16 bit sound card and drivers
100% DirectX® 9-compliant 32 MB video card and drivers
100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP -compatible mouse and drivers
100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP -compatible keyboard
100% Windows® 98/2000/ME/XP -compatible quad speed (600 K/sec sustained transfer rate) CD-ROM drive and drivers
Recommended:

Pentium® 4 or Athlon® 2.0 GHz processor
512 MB of RAM
64 MB video card will full Direct 9.0 support

Vecaryi, any game I have bought in Australia has been the US version, not the UK version.

The US patch is always the one to use.

That used to be the case in many of the previous citybuilders from Sierra, but somewhere along the line I think they changed for Caesar IV.

Since the U.S. patch didn't work ("wrong version") and the U.K. patch did, he's probably got the U.K. version of the game.

I am currently downloading the enhanced game patch from D2D - I guess things have been straightened out? Will let you know if it works.

After having to "Repair' my copy of CotN, I find that a bunch of the Scenarios will not protray on the list page. Neither can I find theoriginal CoTN Home Page from which to obtain the latest patches/upgrades.
I have downloaded and installed the "Alexandria" module and am wondering if that is somehow affecting the upgrade of the original.
I noticed this after downloading and installing the "Search for Utopis" modules and completing the Abu Sir section. I selected "Leave" from the "Sucess Screen" and noticed that neither "Atlantis" nor "Utopis" were listed in the Scenarios available, along wth a bunch of others.
How do I get all of them back and how do I get the latest upgrade patch??

unknown version = the version of your present patch = no need to update the patch
the path to the game's patch is: Documents/Readme.exe (in your CotN folder)
