I have a legal copy of the game, bought it on Ebay. It's actually a UK copy. My problem is with the enhanced download though. As a test, I downloaded the US version, it ran properly as an upgrade, but naturally stopped when it saw the wrong version. 4 times over the past couple weeks I have downloaded the UK enhanced file, and each time, as soon as I try to open it, I get an error message saying file has corrupted data. I don't see where anyone one else seems to be having this problem, any ideas!!!

crash1952...Now, I am no expert but your situation seems a little problematical. I live here in the UK; have a UK XP operating system and UK version of CotN and have upgraded it to 1.3.0.1 using the downloaded UK patch and all seems OK. You live in the States, have a US operating system (XP, I suspect), have installed a UK version of CotN and then want to upgrade it with the UK patch. There is room here for things to go wrong! In one sense, the game needs the UK patch but in another sense, the US patch is required due to your operating system. Others might want to comment on this but I would say that you should ditch your UK copy of CotN and download a fresh copy from Steam or Stardock. You could try to buy a second hand US copy from ebay, but why go through any more hassle?

While it is easy to make the assumption that Windows XP/Vista has different editions for the various parts of the world, there is no real difference. The core operating systems are the same (Except for the XP N edition, without the Media Player bits, especially made for Europe, that I don't think I've heard anyone use). The only difference are the language files, and any OEM preparations done to the media by vendors like HP, Dell, etc.
I would try to download the file with some kind of downloadmanager that supports verifying the crc of the downloaded file. Since there has been no other reports by anyone that there is a problem with the file offered for download, it is most likely an issue with your download that's going wrong.
I'm afraid I cannot recommend any download managers, since I don't use them myself - but perhaps someone else can be of assistance.

I agree with Caledorn. It sounds like your download is being corrupted during the download process. Using a download manager will help.
You can use a program like GetRight (http://www.getright.com) and it will download files for you and even let you pause and resume downloads. I used it for a time when I still had a dialup internet connection and it made getting big files so much easier. Grab the trial version free.

You guys may be right about the whole download thing but, I have downloaded many, many patches and files and have never experienced a file corruption problem. Sure, the whole operating system issue has improved over the years but it is still common to find games that are operating system/country specific. I buy games when I visit my family in Canada and it is one of the things I check on the boxes before buying.

The only other possibility I can think of for a problem extracting a file is that your virus scanner program is causing a problem.

This is, of course, correct. UK/US Edition of CotN for instance is a good example of this - however, as with Windows XP, the major difference between these various editions are again localization issues. I am not certain what other differences there could be to TM's games, and only they can give an official statement to this. However, it still does not explain why crash is having issues with his downloaded file being corrupted...

I agree with this. Try disabling any antivirus scanner or filescanner (like anti spyware programs etc) while downloading the specific patch in question - and leave it disabled while installing the patch. I think it's safe to say the patch does not include any virus or spyware.

Thanks to all for all your ideas, I realize it had to be something with my pc, installing, maintaining and repairing electronic systems has been my job for 36 years. I finally downloaded the UK update at work, loaded it onto a cd and brought it home. It ran just fine from the cd. I then had to update my directx, and all is good now. Just out of curiousity, I just downloaded the UK file again, and now it works!!!
Oh well, one of the standing electronics jokes is that FM actually means F***ing Magic! Thanks again to all!

crash1952...Thanks for getting back to us with the result of your actions. It looks like all our "advice" was in vain but glad you are now up and running. I, like you, have just started playing CotN (city building is a new genre for me) so we might cross paths again soon!
