I have read many of the threads regarding problems with the new patch, and have done what I can to solve my issues, but have not been able to go any further.
I downloaded the US version of the patch, which was not right - it wasn't recognised. I got the UK one which has worked.
Then I had the missing dll message. I downloaded the new version of Direct X. Now I get as far as the "please wait" screen and then it just freezes, I have to restart the computer.

Before any of us can start to help, you should attach a copy of your dxdiag.txt file to the next reply.

Sorry Keith - you're going to have to tell me how to do that.

I think this is the dxdiag.txt file.

One thing that leaps out under the DxDiag Notes section is this...
DirectX Files Tab: Several files (kstvtune.ax, ksxbar.ax, kswdmcap.ax, etc.) are incorrectly installed in the Windows folder and should be deleted.
Not sure what that's about, but maybe look in your C:\WINDOWS directory for those mentioned files and rename them (so change to something like "kstvtune.ax.orig" etc). Then reboot and check again.

This could be part of the problem. The way the message is worded is that they appear to be in the wrong folder. Looks like they may have gotten installed in the Windows folder instead of the Windows/system32/drivers folder.

There are probably a whole list of files and not just the three listed on the dxdiag.txt file that need to be moved. They are proabaly all similarly named with ks*****.ax (kstvtune.ax, ksxbar.ax, kswdmcap.ax).

Seems that it's not a uncommon problem. I just did a quick search on kstvtune.ax and there are quite a few posts about similar problems with WinXPSP2 over the past 8 years.

The files appear to be related to devices like webcams, tv tuners, etc. So it seems to be video related in some way.

1. Uninstall everything under display adapters, but do this in safe mode.
2. After you uninstall it, restart in safe mode again and use DriverCleaner to remove the remains of the driver.
3. Reboot into normal Windows XP and then download and install the nVidia original drivers

http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.php

Safe Mode restart:
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.

In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.

When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.

Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.

Hello helpful people.
Thank you for your patience so far. Keith, your advice seems so extreme that instead I did a roll back to before I loaded both the new patch and newest version of DirectX. I have run a new dxdiag and wonder if there is something less extreme that i can do from here? The game runs now - phew - but obviously is the old version and I, like the grad, will use it if I have to. I'd like to at least view the new version though if poss.
Ideas?

I have been playing the old version of the game and it keeps crashing on me. Perhaps my dxdiag summary will give someone an idea of why this could be happening? I had thought that by reverting to playing the original version I would avoid probs!

The problem is the role back did not fix the problem with the driver files being in the wrong place. So you are likely to continue to have problems until you fix that.

Since you have now made patches available in several different languages, why don’t you make a patch available that does not cause angst for the non- vista players, IE CotN_v1.2? I believe this would solve a multitude of problems. As some of the user created scenarios can not be played by all.

Is there likely to be a better (less buggy) upgrade? Or a patch for the patch? (!) Should I wait for that, or will I be waiting a long time?
I'm a bit confused as to why there should now be problems with the OLD version of the game, after going back to a date when I hadn't installed either the patch or the June 2008 DirectX. Is it my computer? Were there always problems? (This might seem a really dumb question, but I'm pretty computer illiterate... I sort of need things to just load and work...)
Actually, I think they're MEANT to do that, aren't they?

In the technical support thread "Double List" dated 7-23-08, Will Jennings gives you the way to make your old game work again. I hope this helps.
