I bought Children of the nile on steam yesterday on steam, i have not gotten to play it at all because there is some un-named error with the start up. I start it launching can it says "preparing to launch children of the nile..." then the window dissapears. My computer meets all the mininum requirements, and i tried this on 2 separate computers, and had the same exact problem. What can I do to fix this problem?

Attach a copy of your dxdiag.txt file so we can see if your system truly does meet all the requirments.

A dxdiag will definitely help diagnose the problem. The most likely cause is an out-of-date DirectX redistributable; see the known issues post here (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17004) for information on how to update that.

Hi, I've got the same problem. Buyed the game over Steam today, but just can't start it. I just get this default Windows error message. DirectX is on the latest version.

What should I do? :(

Both Mekhet and desonik are using German editions of Windows (according to their DxDiag.txt files), have you successfully applied the CotN_v1.3.0.1_DE.exe (ie, wondering if there's an issue with the German patch) or are you perhaps using a non-German version of CotN? (maybe that's causing a conflict somewhere)?

Post a copy of any error messages you get would be helpful.

Fine, excuse me for trying to help out, obviously I should just leave providing support to the "experts".

I was able to run the game before the latest patch without any problems.
After the latest patch ( autoupdate via steam) the game wont start anymore:(

Hi!

I have the same problem. Since updating to 1.3.0.1 the game wonīt start anymore. No error messages, it just doesnīt show up.
I have the game as CD version and updated via patch (no steam).

I also use a german version...

I just updated Direct X to version 9.23.1350, but this didnīt help either. :(

Alright, here are the error messages...

I tried to start the game with the CoTN.exe in "\Steam\SteamApps\common\children of the nile". I always get a very strange "message (http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/4095/123xp0.jpg)", but see for yourself.

And with Steam I get this (http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/8175/123ea9.jpg). (I hope you don't need a translation :p)

It's the german version of the game.

(Hopefully we see the patch soon. Go Tilted Mill, go. :D)

Seems to be the usual "Children of the Nile has encountered a problem and must close" error message on the big one. It's kind of a generic catchall error message.

The other is because I think you need Steam to launch the game and may not be able to do so by clicking on the .exe file with the Steam version of the game.

Hi!

I have updated the video and audio drivers (the latest from the Realtek HP was from jan 2008 - hope this is new enough?).

The DirectX you suggest (9.0c) is the one I had before updating to the latest, so I kept the 9.23.1350.

It still doesnīt work.
Since I donīt want to cancel anything that is running in the background (which did never interfere with any game I was running including CotN UNTIL the latest patch), is there anything left to do aside from pleading TM for help and assuming it might have anything to do with the new patch not working properly for german versions since here are 4 people with the same problem after running the patch?

@TM: is there a way to turn on a debug output in the initialisation process of the game? That might give a rough idea what is interferring with the new patch.

Just for info:

I deinstalled the entire game and reinstalled everything exept the latest patch (1.3.0.1). It works fine again so I will keep with what I have now until TM gives out another patch that fixes that patch ;)

I'm looking into this at the moment; thanks for your reports and dxdiags.

Virtual drives may interfere with the proper operation of the disk-based version of CotN, but there's nothing in the Steam version that poses a direct conflict (though some virtual drive software tends to cause problems in general).

I'm pretty sure this isn't a driver problem or a software or hardware conflict. There's no known problem with Steam auto-updates; this is most likely a problem with the German version itself.

If you're in Steam and you're willing to play in English as a temporary solution, you can temporarily change the language by right-clicking the game in the My Games tab, choosing Properties, and navigating to the Language tab.

Thanks!

I appreciate you guys from TM caring so much about this game and its fans :)

I still have my hard copy, so I didnīt use steam. Patch 1.3 also works fine so I have no need to change language since I can now live with the minor flaws you corrected with the 1.3.0.1 patch.

Yep, that worked. Thanks. :D

Let's hope the upcoming patch fixes the non-english versions of the game ('cause it seems that not just the german version is affected by this).
