I downloaded the enhanced patch (UK version) and when I tried to install it a screen came up with....
This Program cannot update the installed version of Children of the Nile because of the following reason..
C\Program Files\Sega\ Immortal Cities\Data\Graphics\Interface\Backgrounds\Main_In terface tga: Unknown version.
And yes I did buy the boxed game, anyone know what this means?

Ok I realised that I installed a user made interface a few years ago (the transparant one ....I liked that:mad: so I reinstalled my backgrounds saved folder and the patch installed fine, now to see if it was worth it;)

I am having a similar problem. I bought this game at a store a couple years ago (love it!:p) and I downloaded the patch yesterday and cant' get it to work. I am not a computer savvy person really. I took the patch (once downloaded) and put it into the program file containing CotN. Just in the main file not in any sub-folders. And nothin. Inform me O Wise ones! lol What am I doing wrong?

Double left click on the file you downloaded. Then follow the on screen prompts to install the patch. Just copying the downloaded patch to the game folder does not install it.

"This file contains invaild data" (I'm guessing I have to re-download huh?) *Sigh* I have dial up. lol

Is there a space in the word "Main_In terface" like this in your error message? If so, that seems odd.
Make sure that the language version of the patch and the game match. You cannot use the U.K. patch on a U.S. english version of the game and vice versa.

No, no spaces. I re-downloaded and it didn't do that again. Now I downloaded it and installed. It said it was complete and all was well or so I thought. Now when I try to run the game at all it says: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_33.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I'm gonna re-install for now. Tell me what I'm doing wrong! lol I just wanna play my game :( Like I said, "not computer savvy" sorry for my ignorance. :o
Edit: Re-installing didn't help. Bummer. Any other ideas?

Ok, your missing a directx file, that's what that d3dx9_33.dll error message was about.
If you use Windows XP:
Download the latest version of DX9 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=822640AB-0983-4C41-9C70-632F6F42C557&displaylang=en) for Windows XP from Mircrosoft and install it. Then try running the game.
If you have Windows Vista you need DX10 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=822640AB-0983-4C41-9C70-632F6F42C557&displaylang=en).

Ok I'm downloading. Only 2 and 1/2 hours to go!! lol Dang dail up. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW I saw Catgoddess83 had same problem. And it seems she says she is not "tech savvy" either. Maybe I have found a kindred spirit. lol. This was my first post and I found it very helpful. I look forward to learning more from you all. Thanks!

Since you didn't provide your dxdiag.txt file I gave you links to both versions of DirectX. Hopefully you are downloading the one for your version of Windows.
Time to dump that dialup. You gotta get a broadband connection, DSL or Cable. It's worth it in terms of speed. I resisted for years myself, but finally gave in about two years or so ago and got DSL. Files that used to take me 24 hours to download on a dialup can now be grabbed in just about 20 mins.

I would love nothing more than to burn my phone lines! But alas, I live 500YARDS from the cut off point of cable. :( And it's too expensive for satillite (sp) for me right now.
But I have Win XP so I clicked that one. I started the download pretty much as soon as you posted a reply and I'm still only at 28.5 MB of 74.9 MB. Wow. It's 4am here and I'm just pooped. Maybe I can get some to play the patched game tomorrow (today, I suppose) before work.
I've been reading some other posts though and I've learned a lot about the game. It seems I've been playing very haphazardly so far. I tend to cheat (I know, I know I shouldn't hehe) a bunch. But I have beat it many times without cheating, too. So I'm gonna try some of these tips so I don't have such messy layouts. Well I'm off to bed. Tomorrow I will try it again. Thanks!!

If you are stuck with a dialup you should get a download manager program like GetRight (http://www.getright.com). It will let you resume downloads that you manually pause/stop from the point where they were interrupted. So you can download files over several sessions without losing what you have, and you can even schedule it to dial up and connect for the download on its own. I used it for a while when I had a 56K modem. Came in handy.

Ok I downloaded and installed it ask to pick a file to place it in and I said: C/:WINDOWS/system32 as mentioned in Catgoddess83's question. Game still not working and she said something about a Dx setup to get it to pick out the files she needs. So I have no clue what this is. lol A little more help, please?
EDIT: Never mind! Maybe I am a little savvy after all! I went to Program files and the Direct X file then set it up into the subfolder there and ran the DXSETUP and BOOM! It worked! Yea! Gotta go check out the new stuff! Thanks again!
