How about getting a spell checker in the forum so that I and people like me don’t have to keep copy and pasting in word to make sure all my spelling is ok.

Just an idea don’t know how hard it would be.

I don't think this particular bulletin board system supports a spell check feature.

If you do make an error, you can always use the "edit" feature. :)

It would be nice, but I can live without. And if you're not sure on a word, you could just type it like how you think it should be with (sp?) behind it. At least, that's what I do sometimes (the other times I just make blatant mistakes). :p

Hmm, type up your post in word, and then copy-paste into the form? :)

After a few of my posts of last night, I sure wouldn't mind an automatic speel-checker though. ;)

There's a free spellchecker available for vBulletin 3.x. Not sure if this is a feature the Tilted Mill folks would like to offer, since it doesn't seem to be an official extension, but information and details can be found here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=65723). :)

Indeed.

Believe it or not, this one was actually there on purpose. :D

If you're using Internet Explorer, check out IESpell. It's great. After you install it you can right click in ANY form and run a quick spell check.

Altough with that leak around, it's advisable to avoid IE I think.

Ah, as long as you make an effort to update regularly, you should be fine with IE.

I do update at least every week, but I heard that this particular leak wasn't solved yet.

Never mind about it. I heard it on the news a couple of days ago and they said that there was no patch yet at this point. But I can't find anything about it at the moment.

The current security problem in IE is worse, I have to look up some english sources of it. On www.staedtebauen.de I have listed some of the german sources. The current status is, that I'll move to Firefox and this is the advice I give to my users on staedtebauen.de. The reported problems are critical and there is no fix by Microsoft so far.

http://www.heise.de/security/news/meldung/48725
http://www.heise.de/security/news/meldung/48619
http://www.heise.de/security/news/meldung/48016

Microsoft? (at least the experts at heise.de) recommends to switch security to high, which of course means to disable Active Scripting, not to talk about ActiveX. The CERT recommends to use an alternative browser:

http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/713878/

There is no security bulletin from Microsoft so far, however. Probably because there is no fix yet.

As for the spell checker: if there should be one, I hope there will be a switch to disable it... I really hate spell checkers underlinig names or foreign words and phrases.

I would also recommend using Firefox. I started using it when I got my new computer a few weeks ago and I love it. It is compact and fast, but you can install plug-ins to allow you to do whatever you need. Best part is that it is free.

I've been using Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/) since last year and can really recommend the current version 0.9.x. On my machine, it runs signifiantly faster than IE. There's also Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/) for those who would like to replace the trojan/worm magnet Outlook Express. Both are free.

For the sake of being complete. I've no problems with Mozilla either.

Downloaded Firefox. and will give it a go I need to find out if it works with my anti-v (avast) and my sygate firewall. Hopefully it will as I have had stuff get through even with them but the firewall stopped them accessing the web normally through media player so I may have to stop using that as well

I have Avast! running, but it interacts with everything, not only with the browser (basically, with any file access). Haven't noticed any problems with Firefox and Avast. Under "Tools", you can check out the available extensions and themes. One extension that I highly recommend is Tabbrowser, which can be found here (http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions.html.en). It greatly enhances the tabbed browsing features of Firefox and is probably what totally sold me to this browser. :) It's really nice to have just one window with a tab for each web site you're looking at. Greatly enhanced my producitivity. When you visit sites with Flash, Firefox will prompt you to download the plugin -- the one to choose here is Mozilla/Netscape. Works fine, too.

When I still used IE, Spybot-S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=home) would find one or two dozens of problems every week, even though I kept IE updated and avoided suspicious sites. Now it doesn't find any problems at all. Service Pack 2 for XP should make IE safer, but I actually really like the performance of Firefox, everything else aside. It just renders pages faster.

I copy it to my email. It is quicker and easier then going to Word. AOL is usually a pain, but in this case I like it.

I'll do the same if I am not sure about the spelling of a world. I'll use AOL's email spell checker, and occasionally the dictionary keyword. One of the two true AOL functions I actually use. ;)

I have to admit that I never bother using a spellchecker, even if one is available. That probably accounts for some typos or plain errors in my messages, though I'm usually more concerned about poor grammar on my end (due to English not being my native language), which spellcheckers don't catch. Ah well, as long as we're able to understand each other, typos don't hurt. :) It only gets problematic if people misplace commas and other punctuation marks:

A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman, without her, man is nothing. ;)

Or this one:

Dear Jack,

I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you! I have no feelings whatsover when we're apart. I can be forever happy -- will you let me be yours? Jill.

vs.

Dear Jack,

I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people, who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me. For other men I yearn! For you I have no feelings whatsoever. When we're apart I can be forever happy. Will you let me be? Yours, Jill.
