Okay, rerun of what I posted over at the SCS main site, plus a savegame, as Instructed.

I've only had one game freeze in the three days I've been playing it. *I knock on wood as I say this.*

Otherwise, it seems to run fine.
However, I DO have one unusual quirk.

I have, an intermittent, framerate bomb-out.

To describe what happens... If you play at normal speed, about once a game-day (So you can understand event frequency), at a totally random time, the framerate will go from smooth (60+ fps) to a rate where I can count the frames-per-second on one hand. This will last about twenty seconds, before reaching a slow climax, then, almost as if a rubber band snapped, it'll return to normal smooth play.

I am unsure as to the source of the problem. It occures when the simulation is paused, so it appears not to be related to things like sim pathfinding, or processor congestion and the like.

Toying with the graphics settings doesn't seem to affect it either. It'll crop up even at low settings, with all optional components turned off.

A run through sound settings also has no affect. Dissabling sounds, turning off music.

I'm trying to troubleshoot my end and see if I can't isolate this problem so I can help get a solution suggested. But I'm just confused, so I'll be playing, and trying different settings combinations to see if I can find something.

The only thing I note, is that the frequency seems lower on 800x600 resolution settings.

As far as it being another piece of software on my PC causing a problem... I've never experienced this problem in any of my other 3D rendered games. Not even X3 Reunion (Which is graphics, AND proccessor intensive. You try a game that runs an entire universe...)

Actually, I'll upload three savegames. This allows for greater determination of cross comparing events from the same control group. I've included all save-game component files.

Something else to add, probably unrelated, but I noticed this several times while following vehicles and sims around town... It appears to be a glitch in the pathfinding trace.

Img 31 is the 'rout' a city bus is taking. I didn't know busses drove through the river.

Img 34 is an excelent example of a tractor who's rout suggest it's dreaming of growing up to be a bulldozer.

This seems to occure on different vehicles and sims. But I DON'T think it's intended for the pathfinding tracers to be flying all over the land like this.

How long after building those roads did you take the screenie?

I've seen my busses & other public vehicles do similar shortly after adding new roads. The route corrected itself in seconds, but it was long enough to see it happen.

About a hundred game days prior. :p
Those routes are continuously popping up. The tractor I followed from the moment it appeared at a farm. The funky routes would appear constantly for the entire length of its travels.

Hi AdmiralTigerclaw,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your rather unique problem. We're taking a look at your issues over here. In particular, we were able to reproduce your pathfinding glitch and it is being worked on. We'll get back to you when we believe we fully understand the problem with your city slowing down at random times.

In the meantime, would you be so kind as to post your dxdiag? Thanks!

Don't worry about it. I know how coding works.

Anywho, I'll get the DXDiag posted later, I have to leave for work like... yesterday.

Alright, DXDiag coming at you. You're going to LOVE the way this system's set up. (And by 'love', I actually mean, scratch your head and go  )

Hello again,

The only immediate issue I can take note of from your dxdiag are your drivers. You have 6.14.0010.9147, while the newest one is 6.14.0011.6375. Maybe you can try that out real quick just to see if it works for you?

You can download the drivers here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_163.75.html)

Please come back if you are still having this problem!

Checked, still a no-go.

Same problem, same intermittent time.

Maybe if I point a capital starship at it and threaten it with an Orbital Strike (http://www.sheezyart.com/view/1584045/) it'll behave, ne?

Just a thought. Most things I threaten with overwhelming force tend to listen. :D

But maybe that won't work in this case...

I think I solved this problem.

Turns out it's probably hardware rather than software. My heatsink fan on my Video Card is Dangling from its spot by a piece of plastic. AKA: It's SHOT. So this is probably a thermal anomally.

I'm waiting for Mike to get back to me on PM. In the mean time, I'm stuck here at home because someone else is using my car, so I can't run off to Fry's to replace the fan. I can't make a final confirmation from my end until I replace that fan. Mike can probably do a controlled test on his end, which is what I'm otherwise waiting for.

((In a scientific experiment, even if one is sure of the results, one must still perform a control test to confirm. To do otherwise is sloppy.))

So take heed all ye mortals. Thermal anomalies are a **CENSORED**.

((I'm just surprised the card hasn't fried from playing Battlefield. I get no anomalies there.))

These are the latest...

Okay, managed to get to Fry's today, got me a fan... had to thermal adhesive the thing to the old heatsink. (Fry's didn't have the right fan in stock, and I'm not going to make trips back and forth all the way to Fry's to check every day.)

Initial hour-long operation shows me Problem Solved. No unusual events.

So the conclusion of this problem is that the unusual intermittent framerate drop was indeed linked to an undiscovered thermal anomally occuring in the video card due to total cooling fan failure.

I suggest a tech reminder be placed somewhere so that we remember to double check physical hardware when we're experiencing unusual program anomallies. Something like

IMPORTANT:
"If you are experiencing anomalies, don't forget to inspect your hardware, especially moving parts like fans, for obvious problems. A failed video card cooling fan can result in unusual performance anomalies during periods of heavy card use. And could even cost you your card if not caught early."

It may seem obvious, but the simple things are always the ones we forget to check.

If that were the case, how is it that other (far more intensive games like Crysis) can perform perfectly without issue?

I'm sorry, but I can't see the connection.

Crysis uses all 4 of my CPUs, SCS uses one (badly).

Did any of your cooling fans happen to FAIL? Like my cooling fan? The one that was dangling from where it belonged?
