I have built 2 large cities with no problems. I am on my third and it is crashing all the time. I can only play now for about 10 to 15 minutes at a stretch.

I've used the same tileset for each of the cities. The first two were "Normal Cities". This third is a mix of all the building lists.

My specs:
Intel Dual Core 800 2.7 GHz
2 WD Harddrives
Sony DVD
SoundBlaster Xi-Fi
GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB RAM
Mobo: Gigabyte S-series GA-P35C-DS3R
2 GB System RAM

I have run Norton Disk Doctor to check for HD errors and Norton ScanDisk defragging my drives. No difference.

Here is the error Msg:

Any suggestions/answers?:(

Thanks.

Just an update to my thread. I can't open my city anymore. I get the runtime error right off the bat.:(

if you have 32 bit please install this Visual Studio C++ 2005 SP 1 Update redistributable. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647&displaylang=en)

if you have 64 bit please install this Visual Studio C++ 2005 SP 1 Update redistributable. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=EB4EBE2D-33C0-4A47-9DD4-B9A6D7BD44DA&displaylang=en)

I had issues like this with this game and others lik BIOSHOCK, CRYSIS and AGE
of Empires on both vista and xp but not after this. i hope this helps.

I got that error also. its either a video driver error or your vc++ files are screwed up. ON my machine they were so screwed up (after a bad install of aim ) that I had to reinstall vista. That fixed my problem.

I got that error last night while playing, but only once and I have a fresh clean install of Vista, so Im not so certain it's corrupt vs c++ files that cause it unless Vista is known for installing corrupt files from the installation CD. I mean I do have a fresh clean installation of 32bit Vista Home premium and all....

Its not your PC. Its buggy software. Update anything you want, its not going to help. I have tried it all and nothing helps.
Its a shame too because the game is a lot of fun to play...till the crashes start.

well the links i posted are to packs that reinstall them on 2000, xp and vista
with both 64 bit versions as well. vista has a picky c++ pack and if there is
anything slightly of kilter it just stops. i would try the c++ service pack as i
i found vista and xp do not automatically download them. The one that came
with bioshock was the same installer just corrupted. Let me know if it helps
that way i can know what else to check.

Thanks all for the replies.:)

The update let me open my city but it still crashed after I had played for about 8-10 minutes with the same error.

As for reinstalling XP Pro, no thanks. I cleaned up my system with a reformat and a clean install about 2 months ago just for routine maintenance as I always do every few months. I'm not going to do it again for one game regardless of whether I like it or not (which I do like in this case). All my other games (17 in all) run with no problems. They have always run with no problems since their install. An operating system reinstall in this case sounds like performing brain surgery to remove a wort.:(

Though TM has been quiet I hope they are working on a patch that solves this and other errors/crashes other people are having.

I haven't lost faith, but you know, its just frustrating.:(

I've been trying a few random tests on a few spare PCs and it seems on those computers that I install without the (TM) off the installation directory, they seem to be running a lot more stable.

I am curious do you guys have the cd version or the download version? I have the download version and I want to test if this effects the download version also.

What do you guys mean about Large cities. So i can test this out. Could this be a Copy protection problem. Rct3 had a copy protection problem that caused the game to slow down to a crawl so I am wondering if that could be the case here.

I have the downloaded version and it still crashes.

With reduced settings, the lowest they can go, it wont crash (as much), on my Vista machine it rarley crashes.

IT does slow down when my cities hit more then 10k population, really crawls when moving around and playing.

I havent had many crashes since the settings were reduced, I try to play with the crashing in mind so I dont move to fast or do to much at once, its easy to make it crash if you want it to or treat it like it shouldnt crash (heh).

I have the DVD version of the game and after freshly installing Vista I do get some odd crashes, like when the game uses up 1.3GB of memory or very rarely the C++ crash (only twice now). Much better than it was before when I was running XP that had been installed about 9 or 10 months prior.

I think if it wern't for the games reported memory leak it wouldn't be that bad for me since it's only crashed twice with the C++ error out of the hundreds of times that I've started the game.

Anyway, I've got the DVD version of the game.

DVD here. Bought it at GameStop. They had preorder bonuses left over so the guy gave me that as well. So to be complete that is installed too.

20,000+ I would say is a large city imo.

Here's an oddity that happened to me today. Since my current city crashes all the time I decided to take a look at my other two cities which are under a different profile.

I load the cities and start adding a few things and had no crash. One city had about 10,000 citizens and the other had about 17,000. Didn't get a crash on either. So I went for broke and switched profiles and loaded up my current city that crashes all the time. Well no crashes and I played for a solid hour. So I said hmmm.

I exited out of the game and rebooted. I loaded the game again and went into my current city. I had a C++ crash 8-10 minutes in. So I rebooted again just to be clean and loaded SCS one more time. I went to two of my previous cities again and loaded them and played for a bit. Then I switched profiles and went to my current city. No crashes, again played for about an hour.

Anyway I could be imagining the whole thing or maybe there is some arcane monkey in my system. I don't know what it means or if this really works but I thought I would pass it on.

EDIT: I don't know if this part is relevant but my no crash cities where "normal cities" and my crash city was "show all". It's the "show all" city that stopped crashing doing the above.

There is a memory leak. I have sim city societies windowed and have task manager running. Without doing anything in the game just letting the city run the game keeps taking up more memory. I am betting if I let it run long enough it will slow down my computer drastically or even crash.

This is on vista.
