SimCity works fine on my other PC, but when I tried downloading it on my upstairs computer, an error came up with a document that said:

I'm not sure what it means, but I'm pretty sure my DVD-RW drive isn't reading any discs. I just installed a new Mach-16x DVD-Drive by Pacific Digital. The computer does detect the DVD-drive, and when I put a disc in, you can hear it spin for a couple of seconds. Then it stops and the disc doesn't load.

I've had CD-ROM's and DVD-RW drives do that before. Sometimes they wouldn't read ANY disc, sometimes they just had trouble w/certain discs and I could get them to read it by opening/closing the drawer over and over and over ....
If you have another DVD drive available (or can 'steal' from a family member for test purposes), install it and see if it reads - if it does, then it's likely your current DVD drive is wonky and you should just replace it.

I have one that came with the computer that I took out to put my new one in .. It was horrible. Pretty much. I don't think it plays DVD's, if i remember correctly. Only CD's. I wouldn't be able to play SimCity with it.
I still don't know why this won't work. It's brand new.
Maybe I didn't connect it correctly?
If anybody knows .. It would be nice to share. (:

I don't know anything, :) but I've heard some have trouble with various/certain secure-disc methods ... as well as the possibility that it's just a defective drive, new or not.
Not balanced properly, perhaps, or some other mysterious-to-me hardware problem.
Edit - oh - you could try taking it out of the computer bay it's in, set it on the desk (while still hooked up) and see if it works then. There was one time where a drive I had didn't like the bay - don't ask me why, I don't know ... maybe too much vibration/not stable/firm enough support. heheh *shrug*

.. How would that work.
Can't have the PC open and on at the same time? .. Haha.
I'm going to try again tonight. and read the directions. Letter by letter.
Last time I just threw everything into sockets that fit.
It opens and closes correctly, etc.. IT JUST WONT READ.
I hate it.

Yeah ... could very well be you hooked it up wrong or something. Who knows.
As to 'how do you do that' - I was assuming a desktop PC. If that's the case, you just remove the drive from the bay it sits in - y'know, the slot you slide the drive into/the drive rests in. You'd probably have to unhook the wires first before removing it, since they're usually not very long, then reattach them once you have the drive out of the bay.
As to leaving the PC open while on - sure you can. Well, at least most people can. :p

Oh. Well. On my Dell there's clips that you have to screw onto each side of the drive, so it won't fit through the front of the computer. You have to slide it through from the inside and slide the clips until they click .. I think.
That's what I've been told, anyway.
If it doesn't work tonight, I'll just put the old one back on .. Against my will.
I tried everything from uninstalling the drivers, etc.
Now if I remember, I might have one jumper on Slave and one on Master.
I'm not sure. I'll need to check that tonight, too.

Well, if you can remove it, it can be attached to the computer's innards w/out being in a slot.
Not that I think it's very likely that would 'fix' it. But y'never know sometimes.

I don't know. I'm not really a fan of that whole.
Wires all over the place. lol
PS: Mine looks like the same DVD-RW that guy has.

Hehe, yea, it's messy. :) But you don't have to keep it that way - just to test. That's my 2nd PC, btw. It's a very ancient machine - I use it as extra storage and websurfing while playing games, so I don't have to alt-tab.
Anyway - sorry, I'm a little bored, got carried away on that issue. Good luck. :D

Quick questions. Lol.
1.) Did you connect the audio wire, too? Since my old one didn't even have one, so I wasn't sure if I should. And what setting did you put your jumper on
2.) Did you download the software CD first, or did you just let windows install the drivers when you turned on the PC after connecting it?
3.) Was that the DVD drive that you had to keep out? Since I have the same one .. Maybe that's why it doesn't work? Or did you just go strictly by what the little manual said.
4.) Did you ever have the issue I'm having with that specific DVD drive? Since I don't think I did anything outstandingly wrong with mine. It always sounds like it's about to read it .. But then it doesn't. So I don't think the hardware is broken.
I'm trying to see what you did, so maybe I can correct what I'm doing. So. Yeah.

1 - With the DVD on my main PC, no, I didn't. They don't appear to need seperate audio hookups anymore to work. I have a CD-Rom and a DVD - DVD is set to Master, CD is Slave. If you only have one DVD/CD type device, I believe it should be Master.
2 - I didn't install any hardware specific drivers - just plugged in the wires and that was it. I don't remember if Windows asks if you want to install some - if it does, I said No. I do have Nero installed as my burn-software.
3 - No - it's on top of the case so I can easily reach the open/close button from my chair; the front of the case doesn't face me, in otherwords. heh
4 - I've never owned a DVD of your brand before. My current one is a Sony; ones that gave me a lot of problems were Kenwoods

I guess I'll try setting mine to Master later. The one I had before was set to Cable Select, so I put my new DVD-drive on that option. It doesn't seem to be workin' out so well. Master and Cable have both worked on this PC, though. It shouldn't matter if I have a floppy drive when setting it to Master, right?
On my PC it says it detected the new hardware, and the device would appear in the My Computer folder "working properly." That's why I don't understand the problems I've been having.
& Yeahh .. I'm starting to doubt it's my driver's position that's causing the problem.
EDIT:
I googled my problem, and it seems like a lot of people have had the same problem I have.. Except all of the answers I got didn't really help.

Nope.
When I Googled for similar symptoms back when, the answers weren't very helpful, either. Hopefully the Master will do the trick. :)
The ones I had that would finally play after many re-insertions of the disc - often 10 minutes of trying - I lived with for a while until I got fed up and bought new ones.

Sounds like you have a loose cable somewhere.

I'll make sure that everything is in tightly when I open the PC up again later tonight.

I checked a few sites, and they said to put it on slave mode?
I don't know which one to do. But if I remember correctly, when I did slave mode before, the computer wouldn't even detect the drive. That was an even worse problem.
And yeah. I tried putting it in and out .. I kinda gave up on that.

No luck with reconnecting everything.
EXCEPT. I called Microsoft for some help, and they said cleaning the lens might help. So. I'll try that tonight, I guess.

Bryann, if the drive is a PATA/UDMA drive, it depends on the configuration.
Just because you have a "floppy" doesn't mean it utilizes a PATA controller. It doesn't. It's a totally seperate controller.
If it shares a ribbon with another PATA device, it needs to be set as slave. If it uses its own ribbon, it needs to be set as master.
Please be sure you enable all the secondary pata controller in the CMOS. Sometimes its disabled.
