Game installed fine and I can run the launcher, but after clicking 'play' it goes to a blank screen and makes a 'boink' noise.
Get the following error message:
Runtime Error!
Program C:\Program Files\ElectronicArts\SimCitySocieties.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the applications support team for more information.
My computer is:
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.4GHz, 2gb ram, GeForce 8500 GT 256MB, Vista Ultimate 32-bit
I have .net framework 3.0, have installed DX 9.0c (off the CD) and even downloaded the patch to update the game files.
It still doesn't work!! Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been waiting for this game for ages!

Please run DX diag and create the text file then upload it to your message so we can take a look at it.

Where do I find DX diag? Sorry I am a bit of a novice
Where do I find DX diag? Sorry I am a bit of a novice
Here is a very detailed advice how to do it. http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showpost.php?p=122513&postcount=1
It won't matter what's in the DXDiag report as it's not your system that's the problem, it's the game. Read through the overwhelming runtime posts on here and over at EA and you'll get the picture.
You'll have to patiently await a patch.

Sorry Ed I only just spotted your post after I had uploaded the DX diag.
So I can't do anything until there is a patch?!

Yours like many others seem to be incomplete, not sure why.

Do you mean the game is incomplete? I can get another copy easily enough if that is what I need to do.
I just find it very odd that games I bought just before I got my new computer seem to work fine even though they are not for Vista, but this one doesn't work!

Connellism, you don't have any video drivers loaded for your nVidia 8500 GT card. No drivers are listed on your dxdiag.txt file. You are probably using the Windows default VGA drivers. You'll need to download a current nVidia driver set and install it before yur video card will be able to make use of any advanced graphic features used in many games, etc.
Your dxdiag.txt file looks incomplete because there is no info about your hard drive(s) or CD/DVD drives listed.

Your dxdiag report seems to be missing some items like bios & drives. I seen this in some other earlier reports, but not sure what the cause is.

Hmm that is strange as I downloaded and installed new drivers yesterday.
Will try again and see what happens. As for info missing from the dxdiag.txt...?

How complex are the graphics? I can run Command and Conquer 3 and The Settlers: Rise of an Empire fine and these both have some good bits of video and fairly good graphics.

Make sure that the dxdiag program is done (the green progess bar is all the way to the right) before you save the results.
Check your Control Panel > Add & Remove Software utility. Be sure that any other nVidia driver lists is removed.
Reboot, then cancel the install wizard when it finds a "new device" then install the new driver version.

Right...
Removed old drivers, rebooted etc. and still nothing.
I have attached an updated dxdiag
Help!

Yeah, it's still not listing your driver version and some other info. Somethings not right there somewhere.
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
Manufacturer:
Chip type:
DAC type:
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0421&SUBSYS_04D519F1&REV_A1
Display Memory: 1008 MB
Dedicated Memory: 241 MB
Shared Memory: 767 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: LG L1900R(Digital)
Driver Name:
Driver Version: ()
It's like your video card and drivers are not being properly dectected by your computer. I don't see a make or model number of your computer so you'll have to ask the people where you bought it what is going on. You may have to contact nVidia support and see if they can help you too.
Still no info about your hard drive and CD/DVD drives too.
It's also not detecting and listing the BIOS version in use.

I solved that problem for myself just now actually. The same exact thing was happening to me, and my pc is well above the minimum specs. While experimenting, I shut down my antivirus app (avast antivirus) - not just stopped it, but closed it through task manager. I was suprised to get the game working this way. Now I can't get past the menu (getting that runtime error when going to settings, or adding a new player). But atleast thats a small step forward. Hopefully this will help somebody.

So you could actually get into the game before a runtime error? I can't even get into the game!
I have now installed it on my vastly inferior laptop and it runs fine! TM really need to sort this out so I can run it on my desktop!

I wasn't able to get into the game before I shut down the antivirus - I was getting the black screen and error message. Now, I can get into the menu but no further (runtime eror also).
I, too, have installed the game on a laptop that barely meets the minimum requirements and it works! Though I have to keep the settings to low.
My pc: intel core 2 duo 6600 2.4ghz, 4 gb ram, nvidia 8800 gts 640mb, vista 32bit, and definately enough HD space. My pc runs Bioshock beautifully. I'm getting seriously frustrated with EA and TM.

Well I played for about 45 mins last night on my laptop and didn't have any problems or errors. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get the in game runtime errors I keep hearing about.
Also I have sent my dxdiag to EA support to see if they have any solutions to this problem. I will post the response from EA when I get it.
I have now installed it on my vastly inferior laptop and it runs fine! TM really need to sort this out so I can run it on my desktop!
Now this is weird. It says somewhere that laptops are not supported, yet it seems to run on laptops but crashing on high-end desktops. (I'm getting a good desktop soon, so this is worrying me.)

I haven't played it for long on my laptop so I don't know if I will experience the other runtime errors that people seem to be having, but now that you mention it it does seem weird.
Anyone got any ideas on that?

I too can play on laptop, it is a rather good one but desktop should still be much better....I am however getting the crashing and freezing in game now that city is larger. Would love to be able to play this on the computer I bought it for!
Hope they have something soon.

I am regularly getting the C++ runtime error as my cities grow from small to medium size (about 30-40 buildings). Twice in a row it has happened immediately as a I was getting a you-cannot-build-this message (once for location, once for power).

I have finally had a reply back from EA and they want me to reinstall the game (again) after ending some processes in the task manager. I have yet to try this (been too busy at work), but I don't think it is going to work.
If anyone has tried this could you let me know if it worked?

Already tried that a few times but with no luck, EA thinks they know everything and think they can solve everything but in fact it has nothing to do with processes in the task manager and has everything to do with the games executable, what worked for me for the time being is run it in a window screen and not full screen, i have had no crash since i am running it like this, when i switch back to full screen mode i get a crash within 1 or sometimes 2 min. I do hope they come with a fix soon cause i like to play in full screen mode.

Well, how amused I was when I found out, after spending 40 eurobucks, that SCS got low scores in most reviews. And then, how funny it has been to discover that the game it's full of bugs.
I'm running XP SP2 patched and smooth, antivirus (not Avast), latest drivers (GeForce 7900GTO), Microsoft .net 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and even 3.5, updated C++ runtimes, etc. No matter what: when loading SCS, the bloody Runtime error appears.
I've uploaded DxDiag.txt just in case. As you can see, my hardware is good enough. I'm really pissed off, dudes.
Never seen such a crappy start. I hope a patch will come out soon. If that wont be the case... class action anyone?
Cheers,
Fabrizio

Yes. In fact, I run my whole machine onto a huge Ramdrive ;)

Procedures of the solution:
1) install Microsoft Applocale (which can be downloaded from Microsoft)
2) inside C:\windows\apppatch , delete "AppLoc.tmp" if existed
3) use AppLoc to open EAsetup.exe (inside the DVD-rom)
4) Language choices: "Turkce" (somebody said choosing English is OK, but haven't tried it before)
5) (IMPORTANT!) remove the (TM) inside the install path
e.g: C:\Program File\Electronic Art\Simcity(TM)Society
Changed ---> C:\Program File\Electronic Art\SimcitySociety
(All the problem caused is beause of the  "TM")
6) Continue normal installation procedures
7) Play as normal
have fun and hope it would help anyone who cannot enter the game because of this "C++" problem.......

Sorry but this doesn't solve a thing, the crash originates in the executable from the game itself, if only people would read everything that is already posted, just sucks to have to give the same answers over and over and over again.Besides we are talking about a runtime error here and not having a problem entering the game.
