This has been happening quite frequently today (the first real day of trying to play the game).
I'll be going along just fine then the game just stops. The mouse is still movable but nothing is clickable.
The first time it happened the game locked up the computer hard and only a physical press of the computers reset button was all that I could do.
The second time the game crashed, it went into a BSOD, but restarted before I could see what it had to say and when it sent the report to Microsoft they didn't list any suggestions nor what the error codes were.
This last 3rd time the game locked up again, the mouse was movable, but I couldn't click on anything. i did manage to alt tab to the desktop and when I alt tabbed back to the game the game screen never came up, the mouse was there but no game screen, I finally had to kill the game with task manager.

I was having a very similar issue today - except I couldn't even move my mouse; but I could cntl-alt-del to desktop. Are you loading saved games?
If you are, you might try to load the game, then quickly re-save the game under a new save title, hoping you can get it in before it freezes, then load the new save. That finally cleared the problem for me ... it was as if almost every save game I had became corrupt - since every one I tried to load would do the freeze thing.
I deleted all my old saves when I was done, then turned off the auto-save, too. We'll see if it happens again ...

Yeah that's what I ended up doing except I saved to the same name and this last time I was able to play without it crashing. it was liek when I saved the games the last time that I played them it corrupt the saved game somehow but when I started up the game and saved them again it saved them without corrupting them.
I'll have to see how long that lasts but I think it's something that TM needs to address, since Im apparently not the only one with this problem of loading saved games crashing the game.
Thanks for the reply.

And the game continues to hang, even on newly started games, this time about 30 minutes in or so.

The only thing that I think might be in common here is that I am usually placing a building, or I have the building listing panel open (the one that displays all the buildings) when it hangs on me. That is what seems more often than not to be open when the game hangs like it's been doing. This time I was able to alt tab to my desktop but the desktop would not refresh until I shut down Simcity Societies in task manager, even opening something like my web browser wouldn't be shown on the screen, it's like the game was preventing the desktop and other applications from being refreshed on the screen while it was hung up and still running.

Just started to happen to me to. Somethings up because when I tried to go to LOTRO and load the game it was doing something similar. Which is a serious uh oh for me.

Anybody else experiencing what the Win XP log shows as an Application Hang, such as this, any clues on what is faulting it to do this?
Even after doing a fresh reboot, and making sure to kill any and all process's in task manager that are being run with the username (i.e. leave SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE, and LOCAL SERVICE process's alone) the game still hangs like it's been doing since day One! This is really quite frustrating since no other games that I own (and have trust, I own a lot) are exhibiting anything such as what this game is doing.

I'm getting it in Vista, exactly as you describe.
At first I thought maybe it was the Nvidia driver - I tried playing Crysis shortly after it had locked up and got constant "The graphics driver has recovered from a serious error" messages when trying to load. Updated (newest driver was released this month) and still no joy. I've ended up having to run in windowed mode to prevent it completely locking up the system when it happens.
It's not city growth. Although it usually takes a while to kick in, I had it occur within moments of starting a new city at one point (though IIRC I had aborted a game shortly beforehand).
I'm thinking this is a memory leak somewhere causing windows to try and kill it. However, It feels to me like the lock ups are occuring roughly when I'd be expecting it to autosave, so it might also have something to do with that. I recall problems with the autosave kicking in on C4 pre-patch, it may well be that having the building window or similar open when the game tries to save is killing it. Probably check it out when I finish work.

I recall problems with the autosave kicking in on C4 pre-patch,
It kinda sounds like the issue I personally had might not be the same as others are experiencing, since I don't have any 'random hangs', so don't know if this relates ... but I do know that since I turned auto-save off, I haven't had the corrupted savegame-crash problem.
At least, not so far. *crosses fingers*

 I'm getting the exact same problem on Vista. Game keeps crashing every 15-30mins or so with C+ runtime error. I sent email to EA to see what reply I got (see below). I really find answer 4 quite amusing (Check that the CD is not scratched). Are they serious?!!!!!
It appears lots of other users are having the same problem so I just hope that a patch is released soon to fix this!

Hello Paul,
Thanks for contacting EA Technical Support! I sincerely apologise for the difficulties you're having with the game. I understand you're having issues with SimCity Societies and I know how frustrating that is. I can assure you that I will try my best to have your issue resolved immediately.
Before we continue, I may need to ask for some additional information that might help us figure out what's causing the problem.
- Were there any changes to your system before this happened (software and hardware)?
- Has the game worked without any issues before?
- Are there any specific error messages?
- What exact part of the game does it usually crash?
The following should limit possible conflicts:
1. Make sure that you have closed any programs or tasks running in the background as sometimes one of the programs can conflict with the game. Background applications such as anti-virus programs are often the cause of conflicts.
· Hold down the CTRL + SHIFT + ESC keys at the same time
· Click the "Processes" tab.
· Click on the gray bar in the middle column that says User Name to sort by user name.
· Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.
· Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or other user names.
· Click on END PROCESS
· Repeat these steps until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.
2. Try deleting the temporary files from your system as these may also interfere with the game.
To delete your Windows temporary files on Windows Vista:
1. Click on Start
2. Type %temp% in the search box, and then hit the Enter key.
3. Click on one of the files in the folder that just opened, and press Ctrl + A to select all of the files in this folder.
4. Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
5. When prompted if you are sure, choose Yes.
If you receive a Error Deleting File or Folder message while the files are being deleted, it just means that one of the files is in use by a program right now. Click OK, close all open programs, and repeat the steps above. If this continues, try restarting your PC and repeating the process again.
3. Try reinstalling DirectX directly from Microsoft's web page to allow it to update. If your system still doesn't allow DirectX to update, contact your system manufacturer for further assistance in installing DirectX as it is a system program from Microsoft.
Click on the following link to Microsoft's DirectX download site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=2
4. Check the game CD or DVD for scratches, and test it in another computer. This mainly applies to problems during installation, but can also be an issue during play. CD's and DVD's can be scratched or marked quite easily, and the smallest scratch can cause big problems.I hope somehow this helps, and if there is anything else we can do to help, please let us know.
Best regards,
Dennie J.

Hi,
I am continously experiencing game crashes with the game 'Simcity Societies'. I can no longer play the game for more than 10-15mins before it randomly crashes.
Please find attached my dxdiag.txt for your information. Please can you advise as to what I can do to resolve this? I do not experience any problems with any other game.
Kind Regards,
Paul

Yeah well, except that I don't get any message telling me about a C++ runtime error, or is that what the application XP logs are saying that I posted at the top of this thread?
