Every time I try to install the game, an error message "The folder path 'SimCity?Societies' contains an invalid character" will pop up and the installation will abort. This happens right after I enter the serial.
I think the problem is that my computer failed to recognize the "TM" symbol. I've tried using AppLocale to load the installer since my WinXP is not English, this allowed me to proceed further but the same problem comes up again after I've selected my installation path. Is there a workaround of this?

Run DX diag, create a text file of it and upload it so we can see it. Sounds like it might be a secu-rom(copy protection software) problem. That usually happens if you have "virtual drive" software installed secu-rom software won't work with "virtual drive" software installed.

The problem is that SCS tries to install in a folder that contains the 'tm'-char. So if a language version does not properly have this character, then Windows replaces it by a ? which is not allowed for a directory name.
Solution: When installing, change the default name of the install folder to something more standard.

Something similar with Caesar IV which gave the Turkish language version of Windows problems. It would not recognize one of the letters in the spelling of the required file. Fortuntely for the Turkish users all they had to was rename the file to the one expected. Not sure what you are going to do with your problem.
Have you tried using a custom install path?
I don't have SCS so I don't know the actual path, but you may want to try to create a custom path similar to the real one but without the any spaces or tymbols.
Example:
Instead of the original (ficticious)
C:\program files\electronic arts\simcity socities™
try
C:\program files\electronicarts\simcitysocities

tobing & Keith: Thanks for your replies, but the game doesn't give me a chance to designate its installation path, the error message will pop up right after the installer confirmed my serial key. In the case when using AppLocale, the same error will still appear even if I delete the "TM" from the installation path when the game starts to copy files onto my computer.
mouse: Sorry, what is a DX diag?
Sorry, what is a DX diag?
DxDiag will help a tech person to see if there is something 'special' in your PC. Here's how to do it http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showpost.php?p=122513&postcount=1

I have the same issue. I have tried to contact ea support, but nothing yet, except that they want a picture. My mom's 7 year old computer could atleast download it. If we don't hear anything were going to take it in monday, because I can't even format it anymore. LOL
