View Full Version : Won't Read DVD

My DVD drive won't detect the DVD. (The cursor changes to the little disc searching pointer for a few minutes, but once it stops, there is no disc in the drive according to the drive list.) It works fine on my husband's computer, so I know it's not the disc. The only other time I've experienced this problem was before I installed the DVD playback software that came with my drive, and that time it was with all DVDs. Other DVDs read fine. It's a Plextor 705-A (I think that's the model number.) DVD +/- RW drive.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or work around it?

Find the correct Plextor Model number and upgrade the firmware.

Please note that this can be risky and an incomplete/corrupt firmware upgrade could permanently render your drive useless.

Thanks for the advice. I'd toyed with the idea of doing that, as it was the only thing I hadn't tried yet, but laziness won out. I went out and bought a new DVD drive and not only did it work fine, but Windows seems to like it better. It worked out of the box, instead of requiring tweaking and DVD playback software installation like the Plextor drive did.
