I am getting a vc++ runtime error. The game goes to start the screen turns to black and boom the error pops up.
I am installing the latest beta nvidia drivers onto the computer to see if this works.
the computer is a core 2 duo laptop with 8600mgt video card and 1 gig ram. Vista 32 home premium.
anybody have any fixes or suggestions?
Newest video drivers did not work

I was asked by tilted mill to post how i fix my problem.
I did a compeltel reinstall of vista and that worked. I had installed the latest beta version of aim about a week or two ago wich hosed my system. IT screwed a lot of things up.
I am thinking that the beta of aim that i installed screwed up the runtime files for visual c++ on my machine. The easiest way to fix that was to reinstall vista.
IF you have a system restore point that is clean that might work too but I didnt have any that were early enough.
My laptop is a core 2 duo, with 1 gig of ram,8600mgt video card and 160 gig hdd with vista home premium 32 bit.
I was also able to max everything out. It ran slow but was quite playable.

I'm having the same problem, getting a runtime error.
But after some testing I found out that the game only crashes when I play larger cities (on the official BB this was also mentioned). Smaller cities don't crash. I can play a big city anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes before it crashes.
System specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.4GHz
ATi Radeon X1950PRO 512mb
2GB RAM
Are there any suggestions besides doing a new install of Windows Vista?

What is the exact error? Yours sounds different then my problem. The game itself didnt start for me.
Have you tried updating your video card drivers?
Shutting off the enhancements for the sound card (right click on the speaker by the clock and click playback devices. click on the device and check disable all enhancements)?
Is your sound card drivers up to date?
Do you have the patch for the game installed?
Please post the exact error.

Everything is updated.
It just says it's got a Runtime Error. Normally I wouldn't have seen the error message because it's gone when the game shuts down. I only saw it when I alt+tab to the desktop before it did.
As I said it only happens when playing big cities, no problems as long as they are small.

I haven't got Aim or any other messaging program installed on my computer.
I'm downloading vcredist_x86 as someone suggested, see if that helps.

Having a similar problem. The game freezes instead of going to a black screen, however, then I receive the error message.
Windows Vista Ulitmate
Intel Core 2 Duo Q6600 2.4GHz
4GB DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce 8800
I have Caesar IV and am able to run massive cities with little problem.

I to have this very annoying problem, tried different things.
1. Fresh install (i tried XP and Vista)
2. Updated all drivers, videocard, soundcard etc. etc.
3. Downloaded vcredist pack also tried the SP1 version of it
4. Updated DirectX, even tried the SDK pack of directx.
5. Tried different .net framework versions.
6. Even tried with Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 installed
Now nothing helped and the game still crashes with the Runtime Error, this maily happens when the cities have grown a bit or after you been playing for 20 minutes or so. With the crash happening at bigger cities i can not even play longer then 2 min anymore.
Now this game really need this fixed ASAP because it becomes unplayable.
Windows Vista Ulitmate
Intel Pentium D Proccesor Duo 2.9 GHz
2GB DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
Also tried it on Xp, same problems exist.
Tried running in windowed mode, but still having the same problem.

Is Societies multi-processor aware? Maybe if you disabled the second processor or set the game's affinity to the main core might help. At least for Simcity 4, if you don't do the above, it becomes unstable as the OS tries to unload processing on the second core/processor.

Anyone having a problem will need to attach their DX diag text file to a post for us to look at to see if we can help. Two common themes of problems with the game are Vista and hardware issues.

Morpheus I think your problem is DX 10 try install DX 9 from the game cd. You also might want to roll back your video drivers to the first of this year.

XelNaga your problem is the drivers your using for your video card the newest drivers are not always the best for a game. Also there is something wrong with your DX diag it doesn't show all the information it should show.

Rumpletazer in your case I think you too need to roll your video drivers back to the early part of the year.
To all three of you the newest video drivers are not the best drivers for a game since they have come out after the game was tested. Changes are made to drivers almost monthly but a game developers works with the drivers available at development time.

Uhm directx 10 comes installed with vista and is backwards compatible with dx9 also i updated it to the latest version and there is NO way you can uninstall directx 10 on Vista. Also tried different drivers and i even tried running it on XP same darn problem and on that i was running dx9 so it has absolutly totally nothingto do with DX9 or 10 or whatever videocard driver, also no relation to soundcard drivers as i have tried them all and even tried a different soundcard, also not mouse or keyboard related, also tried different ones and with all kinds of different drivers, even tried with different version of .net framework installed, tried the directx sdk, tried even with visual studio 2005 and 2008 installed, same problem, it's something that is inside the game that is causing the crash that hopefully will be fixed soon so we can play with larger cities.

I first had drivers from July (7.7) or before (bought this pc in August, hadn't updated after that), don't know which version on the top of my head and with those installed the game also crashed just as which the newest drivers.
Might give an even earlier version a go tomorrow.

Morphus you can install DX 9 on Vista without uninstalling DX 10. DX 10 handles video differently from DX 9. All we can do is offer known to work solutions but without sitting right in front of the computer and checking things like background programs it's all we can offer.

ive tested both the dx9 and driver scenerio myself and still recieve the runtime message several minutes into playing. Oddly enough for a game that encourages huge city building (ie some the rewards require some 20-30k people in it) that a situation like this could occur. Hopefully a solution is found asap^^>

There are some other solutions that can be tried since a run time error can be triggered by other things such as video card overheating which was an issue with some cards and where present in CIV which is based on the same game engine. There are some game and interface settings that might be the source of problem such as the need to turn off shadows or turn on settings in the interface for pause for all messages.
Also another source of run time errors is background programs such as disk polling software or auto update software running in the background.

I here have the same problems.
It started with my first city, problem cames when the city grows to ~10.000 people's and playing 15/20 min.
Then i started a new city and here the problem is comming when the city has 5.000 people's but the playing is still the same 15/20 min.
my configuration is:
Intel Core2Duo 6600 @ 2,7 Ghz
4 gb DDR2 Ram
Nvidia Geforce 7600GT
Vista 64 bit Ultimate
Tried to find out what the problem is, but can't find any thing. I have installed the directX version that is deliverd with the game, but no result.

@ReedOfAmun (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/member.php?u=2587) :
You can try these steps :
1) Install a new driver for your graphic card and sound card.
2) Maybe you need to reinstall Stronghold (it seems that it has some errors. This may/may not be the cause of this problem, but its better to let everything in 'good' status)
3) Increase the amount of PageFile
4) Give me the details about your harddisk and the spaces in the drives (C:\ and others if you have) Your dxdiag isn't complete.
5) Make sure you tried all the 'solutions' in this thread. When all the steps are not helping, then only try mine.
Thanks :)

Maybe you can see something strange in my dxdiag file. I self can't see anything.
I will try to install a new videodriver, that is the last thing I can do.
I have now version 163.69 and will install 163.75.
I'll let you now if it's working.

I have XP and Vista installed in my Computer
The game runs normal in Vista
but in XP, I have the runtime error
I try to find a solution in the Microsoft Support site
I found a hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/884538) for this error, but you have to make a request of this hotfix
I made the request a 2 days ago, but didn't reiceve answers yet.
I found the same hotfix in another site for download, but when I tryed to install, I receive the message "The Hotfix is only for english version of Windows", and my Windows is portuguese.
For who have the english version - Download HERE (http://aknow.prevx.com/zerol/WindowsXP-KB884538-x86-ENU.exe)
Good luck, I think it will work
I'm from Brazil. My english is very bad

Here is what I think the problem is. Gamespot reviewed the game and said that the game crashes. It doesn't matter how big and powerful your system is.
"be prepared: Though the frame rate isn't that stable to begin with, building a large city can slow it to a crawl, so prepare to turn down your settings, even on a higher-end machine. We also experienced crashes to our desktop on two separate machines, though a recent patch seems to have helped clear up these issues for some players."
.
I did download the patch but I'm still encountering the same problems as everybody else here. Doesn't seem like a software malfunction or whatever.
.
My PC specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bits
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40GHZ
2.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT

It's caused by your video chipset. Videochipsets are not supported by SCS.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-------------------
* OS: Windows(R) XP SP2 / Vista*
* Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel CPU or faster, AMD XP 2100+ or faster
* Memory: 512 MB RAM
* Hard drive: at least 2.1 GB free space
* Video card: 128 MB**
* DVD drive: 4 speed
* Sound Card - DirectX 9.0c compatible
* DirectX - Version 9.0c (included on disc)
* Input - Keyboard, Mouse
*Windows Vista requires a 2.4 GHz processor or equivalent and 1 GB RAM.
**Supported chipsets: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 or greater; ATI Radeon 9600 or greater; onboard chipsets not supported. Windows Vista requires an NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater, ATI Radeon X600 or greater. Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.
Only the newer Intel 945G and higher chipset might have a chance at running the game, because these provide the hardware support for the graphic features used in 3D games....and only if there are the proper video drivers for that chipset installed which also support those graphic features.
