DO IT YOURSELF
Another element set to return later on down the road (if not out of the box): Modification tools. Player-created buildings and scenarios gave previous SimCity games considerable replay value (even beyond their near-limitless default potential), and these -- along with the capacity to modify building behaviors, and theoretically construct entirely new city profiles -- have a home here. As for full-blown online functuality: "We're looking at some of those things with EA,"
senior designer Jeff ["Da MAN"] Fiske teases, "but right now, we're not disclosing our plans on what we're going to be doing."

Where's the other transportation besides the blocky roads we've seen so far? Is this one of the unnecessarily complicated infrastructure options they've ditched?

You expect TM to spill all the beanz today, Cirugo? Guess why I call them Ticky & VERY Evil™? ;)
It took MONTHS for TM to spill ANY beanz on C4's military & THAT was something I was dying to hear about.

The GFW article was good as so much as it does promise tools to make your own little city unique , The GFW states the Hardcore sim city players will appriciate the game , suggesting the Hardcore sim city players will be playing sim city societies, however this is far from the truth right now with only a very small % of hardcore players being onboard at this piont. I think the GFW was wrong to suggest at this piont that the hardcore sim*city*player will appriciate the game just yet . And i think they insulted us also by this suggestion .
However this is a drip feed exercise so we await more good news , you guys now just think transport ,industry needs rails , the city needs viens .
ps if my spelling sucks edit it urselves ,,

The problem is that The game can't be too dependent on Micromanaging. Watching how the sims in the city react. What buildings need workers to build , wich ones need actual money too build an dhow everything effects the city is enough already.
If you add power and water to that equation it can get too micromanagy and make the game not as fun.
To keep the game fun they had to take things out when they added things. In my opinion sim city 4 had too many things you had to watch and keep track of.

so they are hinting that we could potentially create our own society types based on specific combinations of energies.... oooh noice yes i mean noice.

I'm still not convinced. TBH the GFW preview makes me like the game idea even less than I did before. SC:S is not developing into a city-building game. It is developing into a society-building game. I will reserve final judgement until the game is actually released - but for now I remain disappointed.

Thats more of what it is. Sim City Societies. Your still building a city but more to do with the society and how the design of your city affects that society.
This is not a true successor to sim city 4. It is not labled sim city 5. I happen to like the idea.
Heck I dont see nintendo fans berating nitnendo because they made a game called Super Paper Mario .
At its core you are still building a city. So what if this is not a direct sequal.
Maxis is busy with spore.
I think people are looking at this game the wrong way.

I hope this fresh, better direction for the SimCity franchise comes to full fruition.
The past two incarnations of SimCity were not to my taste. They lacked the freedom of SimCityClassic and SimCity2000. As to the over-emphasis on micromanagement ... ugh ...
On the plus side, the excellent user built architectural add-ons were wonderfully designed (for the most part) and greatly added to the eye-candy of the game.
As to my personal preferences, I would love to see SimCity Societies include aspects such as Tropico and Tropico2:Pirates Cove's aproach to society management and interaction. Yes these games are a bit dated ... but so wonderful to immerse oneself into. Being able to build off the shelf societies like these ... or build mods to the games following these themes... (Dictator in a banana republic... or Pirate King) would add something far more enticing than ... ho humm... I'm the Mayor... but also the plumber... dispatch for emergency services... etc...

COOL, I'm arresting all mimes straight away: You have the right to remain silent but anything you do say (or mime) can and will be used as evidence against you in a court of (Sim) law'
LOL. Chuckling already at the fun I can have with this game...

I love the mimes that are getting arrested!
Indeed...it seems there's something of the Terry Pratchett in there. For there is a special dungeon in the Patrician's Palace in Ankh Morpork where at the bottom of the very deep mime pit, chiselled into the wall is the dictum ¨Learn the Words¨ :D :D :D

People are not giving this game a chance. They havent even tried a demo or anything and they are already blatenyly bashing it. This is still a city building game.
this is from the text file on the original simcity disc
"SIM CITY - MAXIS
INTRODUCTION
Enter Sim City and take control. Be the undisputed ruler of a sophisticated
real-time City Simulation. Create your own dream City (or dream slum) from the
ground up. Whether you take over an existing City or build a new one, you are
the Mayor and City Planner with complete authority.
Your city is populated by Sims - Simulated Citizens. Like their human
counterparts, they build houses, condos, churches, stores and factories. And,
also like humans, they complain about things like taxes, mayors, taxes, city
planners and taxes. If they get too unhappy, they move out; you collect less
taxes, the city deteriorates.
The next few sections will explain the overall concept of Sim city and give
information that win help you win Scenarios and design and build better cities.
Sim City Is a SYSTEM SIMULATION. The challenge of playing a SYSTEM SIMULATION
game is to figure out how the system works and take control of it. As master of
the system you are free to use the TOOLS to create and control an unlimited
number of systems (in this case dues) within the framework and limits provided
by the RULES.
In Sim City, the RULES to learn are based on city planning and management,
including: Human, economic and political factors, survival factors, the
strategies in order to face disasters, unemployment, crime and pollution, and
life quality in your city.
The TOOLS allow you to: plan, zone terrains, clear the city of trees, build
roadways, airports and sea ports, set up and maintain a power grid, sow
desolation and destruction creating natural disasters.
But the most important TOOL of all is the Simulator Itself. Test your plans and
ideas as you watch the city grow or shrink through the immigration and
emigration of industrious Simulated Citizens. Sims will move in and build
homes, hospitals, churches, stores and factories in the zones you provide, or
move out in search of jobs or a better life elsewhere. The success of the city
is based on the quality of the city you design and manage.
B) The goals of Sim City
There are many goals to be pursued and reached in Sim City. Flare is one in
particular:
Your dream city
Perhaps the main goal of Sim City is for you to design, manage and maintain the
city of your dreams. Your Ideal place to live may be a bustling megalopolis,
lots of people, lots of cars, tall buildings; high-energy, high-density living.
Or it may be a small rural community, or a linked group of small communities
providing slow paced country living.
As long as your city can provide places for people to live, work, shop and
play, it will attract residents. And as long as traffic, pollution,
overcrowding, crime or taxes don't drive them away, your city will live.
"
Notice how it states the goal of the game is to build your dream city.
Point out to me where it states it has to be realistic? obviously people dont remember what the original game was about.
You can do everything that the original text file stated in simcity societies . Simcity societies .
Even the Basic rules (as described by MAXIS themselves) are still the same.

How utterly evil!
Hey, don't confuse me with facts, my opinion might look rather foolish in the process.

I just read the article and am a little bit more excited about the game . It seems like there's a lot of depth to the 'social energies' concept, and I like how it mentioned that changes aren't merely cosmetic. I do hope there's some level of evolution in buildings though; it can be rather fulfilling to watch small buildings grow into large ones rather than plopping a large building (say a skyscraper) straight down. I'm intrigued by the level of experimentation the game promises, and it looks like there will be an editor, so that's a plus right? If there's any quips I have, it's that surely creativity can be represented by something other than Gingerbread houses? :)
