Simtropolis has conducted a short interview with Rod Humble (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=368&threadid=89604&enterthread=y), head of the Sims division at EA. Here's a snip:

Dirk: Can you first tell us about EA’s relationship with Titled Mill?
Rod: I had met Tilted Mill at a few E3’s just to chat bout their game design philosophy and keep in touch. Then one year the opportunity came up to work together. We had been working on the Societies concept and prototypes internally for about half a year but realized there was so much in there that ambitious it probably wasn’t going to be able to fit into our line up Then I took a look at what TM had in terms of their technology and expertise and I figured I would see what they thought. Immediately I got back a wave of ideas and documents which took the design in and made it feel fuller and better. From that point on and given the passion here at EA and TM for the game it fell into place very easily.

Dirk: Based on the title, Societies, it implies the game will be going in a particular direction, what will it be?
Rod: We will be revealing more details in the following weeks. But at its highest level when we were thinking about where SimCity could go we started wondering why certain cities feel different from another. So for example what’s the difference between Paris and Mecca? Or Oxford and Munich? Or San Francisco and Salt Lake City? Clearly the feel was the kind of culture and society. By focusing on the society and culture drivers within a society we found we could create many varied and wonderful places.
Also included are 5 new screenshots. Head over (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=368&threadid=89604&enterthread=y) to check out the full interview and screens!

Thank you, Reed! :)

This was first mentioned in Fukuda3's thread (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13076), but definitely needs to be made a sticky!

Methinks we finally have the answer to what Norman has been doing all this time. ;)

I wish to express my gratitude that Rod Humble took the time to recognize the SimTropolis Community via interview with Dirk. One of my desires for TM is that they would be sure take and play ST4 with the mods and bats from the ST community, including SC4 Devotion, PEG and particularly the Asian BAT community as discussed on http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=153&threadid=51212&highlight_key=y&keyword1=asian.

I distinctly hope that Dirk's 'Asian doppelganger' in that community have the same privilege of having recognition for their contributions to what SC4 is today, years after the final publish, and in hopes of what SC5 is to become. I don't know who Dirk's counterpart would be, but if nobody else 'fits', I highly recommend props to SOMY and/ or NOB as artists that I'm particularly fond of. If 'SimCity: Societies' is to live up to the name, ties with the existing SC4 communities of multiple languages and cultures would be appropriate.

Regardless of TM’s ‘outreach’ to other SC4 communities, it really does warm my heart to see Dirk’s interview posted. In spite of the rants, my hope is to see the start of a beautiful relationship between the people around the world who made SC4 great and the people who are working to make SC5 even better.

Muahahahahaha!

I LOVE the evil dictator screens. If this game truly takes on the "personalized society" aspect like they said they are doing, I'm going to enjoy being meniacly eeeeeeeeeeeeevilllllllllllllllllll!

I thought I spied Wat Chedi Liem (Chiang Mai, Thailand) and the Potala Palace (Lhasa, Tibet) in the pics.

The screenshots are not bad, but they are flat if these actually appear in the production version.

What 3D modelling program did the developers use, by the way?

August 18th, 2005 Tilted Mill issued a press release announcing the completion of the Linden Engine.

Tilted Mill has developed its own proprietary game engine to provide the perfect visual experience for the next generation of city-building and RTS games. The "Linden" engine has been built from the ground up utilizing the latest in shader technology, and can provide detailed views from as far as falcon's eye to as close as the cracks in the cobblestones of a city street. But Linden is not just for the power user -- it efficiently tailors features to maximize a user's performance and provide as rich a visual experience as possible whether on an old "clunker" or the most cutting edge machine available. The Linden engine will first be used for Tilted Mill's upcoming title, Caesar IV. Click here for screenshots (http://www.caesariv.com/us/gallery/screenshots.php)!

It's entirely possible SC:S will be running on an upgraded Linden engine, but I'm not sure.

Note: Children of the Nile used an adapted Empire Earth engine.

There was also this (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=41001&mode=thread&order=0) from this (http://www.tiltedmill.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12619) thread. It appears to me that it isn't an actual engine at all, but being totally clueless about this sort of thing, I wouldn't know. :)

Wow.

I'm late in catching up to all the screens.

Those last 5 with 'Red City' are fantastic.

The fire, smoke and atmospherics in the industrial image is great too. It feels like the beginnings of something 'Blade Runner'.

Bravo.
