thanks for your help, and your welcome Phil

unfortunately, even with the USB disk not attached the whole thing still goes 'pop'.

Can't give you error messages because the machine simply reboots as soon as I try and run the game ...

can't find any error files in the install directory either.

I'm assuming other people have got this to run and I've not just bought an application for restarting of my computer ...

ok ...

I have learned things ....

number 1 : you can actualy get the blue screen of death error messages, instead of just having the machine restart with XP, by right clicking 'my computer', then preferences/advanced/startupand recovery - settings/ and unclicking automatic restart.

number 2 : error messages are good.

mine told me that ASPI32.sys was screwy, or words to that effect (why they use a SCSI programming interface for an IDE drive I'm not going to get into ...) but the important point was this meant I knew what to update .. so anyone having the same problem might like to try updating 'aspi32.sys'

I downloaded the relevant bits from http://www.adaptec.com (just searched and downloaded the latest I could find which was aspi_v471.exe) and installed that, and hey presto, we're away.

It runs ... I'll be back when I find it breaks as soon as I start playing it ....

and just so anyone else can find this when searching lets give them something to search for :

how to fix children of the nile - immortal cities - when computer restarts or crashes due to aspi32.sys

Thanks for the help

I'm glad you got it going. After reading your first line I was going to suggest you disable the auto-restart, but then I saw that you figured that out.
